Clinical Neuropsychologist, Cornerstone Neurology Timothy Ainger, Ph.D. Neuropsychology Fellow, Cornerstone Neuropsychology As psychologists, we need to recognize the importance of memory in the healing process. Understanding the disorders that cause our clients to have cognitive disruption that could impact the therapeutic process is vital. The goal of this workshop is to provide information on various cognitive disorders, including warning signs to know when a referral for further examination may be necessary. Additionally, we will provide up-to-date information on current treatments for cognitive disorders, namely Alzheimer s disease, as well as future directions in dementia treatment. Finally, participants will hear information on strategies that can be used in therapy to assist patients and caregivers. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to: 1. know the difference between normal aging, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia; 2. increase awareness of warning signs that could signal that a client needs formal cognitive assessment; 3. gain a deeper understanding of the processes involved in formal cognitive assessment; 4. state commonly prescribed medications; 5. state where dementia treatment is headed; and 6. understand strategies in therapy that could assist patients and caregivers.
