Symposium Description & Target Audience The 1 st Annual Arlington Breast Cancer Symposium was developed with the primary care physician in mind. Physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals in attendance will review the cancer patient s experience from diagnosis through survivorship. The overall objective of this activity is to illustrate the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer management, emphasizing the critical role of the primary care physician. Symposium Objectives Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to: Review current guidelines in breast cancer screening and the various options in breast imaging. Discuss basic principles of staging breast cancer. Review the use of receptor studies in diagnosis and treatment planning. Examine the impact of genomic testing on staging and treatment. Distinguish between various surgical and reconstructive options in the treatment of breast cancer. Identify appropriate candidacy for each option. Explain today s navigator role and methods used in guiding the patient through barriers to care. Assess the benefit and limitations of current genetic testing modalities. Defuse the fear of caring for metastatic breast cancer in a primary care environment. Discuss the role of chemotherapy and need for surveillance. Describe acute and late toxicity effects of radiation therapy for breast cancer and the mechanism of action that causes these side effects. Discuss the opportunity of surveillance for patients who have had radiation therapy. Identify the concepts of adjuvant and neoadjuvant treatment and what factors are considered in deciding to use each modality. Discuss surveillance and long-term risk of recurrence.
