NATIONAL SPECIALIST REGISTER CRITERIA FOR REGISTRATION FOR REGISTERING AS A PROSTHODONTICS SPECIALIST IN MALAYSIA A. Introduction is that branch of dentistry pertaining to the restoration and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance and health of the patient by the restoration of natural teeth and/or the replacement of missing teeth and contiguous oral and maxillofacial tissues with artificial substitutes. It comprises: Removable or Prosthetic is that branch of prosthodontics concerned with the replacement of teeth and contiguous structures for edentulous or partially edentulous patients by artificial substitutes that are removable from the mouth. Fixed is that branch of prosthodontics concerned with the replacement and/or restoration of teeth by artificial substitutes that are not removable from the mouth. Conservative is concerned with the conservation of teeth in the mouth. It embraces the practice of operative dentistry and endodontics, and includes various kinds of directs and indirect restorations of individual teeth in the mouth. Operative dentistry deals with the art and science of the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and prognosis of diseases or trauma to teeth. It is indicated primarily for dental caries, malformed, discolored or fractured teeth and replacement or repair of existing restorations. Treatment should restore proper tooth morphology, function, esthetics and harmonious relationship with the surrounding tissues. Implant is that branch of prosthodontics concerned with the replacement of teeth and contiguous structures by artificial substitutes partially or completely supported and/or retained by alloplastic implants. Maxillofacial Prosthetics is that branch of prosthodontics concerned with the restoration and/or replacement of stomatognathic and associated facial structures by artificial substitutes that may or may not be removed. B. AIMS The specialty of aims to: - Deliver advice, support and treatment to patients referred from primary care Provide multi-disciplinary levels of care, including repairing failed treatments that negatively affect the mouth and smile, treatment of maxillofacial abnormalities, treatment of cases stemming from oral/maxillofacial trauma or neglect and advanced dental care for complex anatomical features of the teeth, gums and supporting bone structures Act as the architect of a restorative treatment dental plan, using state-of-the-art procedures. 1
C. TRAINING The committee has agreed that any individual training in any of the parts of as listed in (A) shall make it eligible to be registered as a Specialist, provided that criteria in (D) is fulfilled. Therefore, the training can be listed as: fixed and removable is offered as a 2-year fulltime course in the United Kingdom and most of commonwealth countries; and as a 3-year fulltime course in the United States. Prosthetic a 4-year fulltime course locally and a 1-year* full time in the UK Conservative a 4-year full time course locally and a 1-year* full time course in the UK Operative dentistry a 1-year* course in the United States. It is not commonly pursued as the rests and the committee has agreed that this qualification to be categorized as Conservative, although they are not completely similar. *The 1-year course is becoming obsolete; current and future training should encompass both fixed and removable prosthodontics. D. Criteria for Registration For a person to be eligible to register as a specialist in prosthodontics, they need to show evidence that their formal training encompasses a comprehensive, structured and balanced specialist training programme (both theoretical and clinical training) in the field, to enable them to undertake independent clinical specialist practice with proficiency in restoring function and aesthetics for patients with complex dental problem such as diseased, injured, abnormal teeth or missing teeth and supporting structures. General Requirements to register as a specialist in 1. Possess a current Annual Practising Certificate 2. Has clinical experience in the specified field of specialty for a minimum period of 4 years inclusive of the training period that leads to a recognized qualification stated in item (4) below. 3. One who does not fulfill item (2) and (4) mentioned above shall need to show evidence of the following: i) postgraduate qualification in prosthodontics (not listed in Schedule A) ii) presents a variety of complex prosthodontics cases (10 cases) treated by him/her to the Restorative Subcommittee to demonstrate proficiency in : o contemporary diagnostic, assessment and clinical techniques and laboratory procedures relevant to prosthodontics. o assessment and formulation of treatment strategies including involvement of colleagues from other disciplines. o the ability to provide comprehensive prosthodontics treatment. 2
o accountability and communication verbally and in writing to patients, professional colleagues, trainees, managers, lay staff and others. 4.
