Activities: Iranian Psychiatric Association Report Ahmad Jalili Zone 15 August 2011 2011 / OGA / 4.1.3 (15) 1) Annual meeting of the Iranian Psychiatric Association: - Annual congress of IPA, November 18-21, 2008 in Tehran - Annual congress of IPA, November 24-27, 2009 in Tehran - Annual congress of IPA, November 23-26, 2010 in Tehran In each annual meeting there are between 800 to 900 registered participants and a number of students. All the meetings include sessions for individual presentations, research reports, panels and symposiums and poster sessions. Many times internationally recognized colleagues attend these congresses. For instance, Professors Levent Kuey and Hamid Ghods participated in the last congress. 2) Social scientific events: A. Iranian New year celebration meeting in Mar 9, 2009 in Tehran Iranian New year celebration meeting in Mar 15, 2010 in Tehran Iranian New year celebration meeting in Mar 21, 2011 in Tehran Each of these events includes some social activities and a scientific program. The families of all members are invited to attend. B. Defeat Depression Club meetings: Defeat Depression Club Meeting is a get together of Psychiatrists and their family members in a holiday; which includes artistic, social and sport activities and a scientific lecture regarding different aspects of depression. 6) During these 3 years IPA approved the establishment of the following sections: 1. Mood Disorders 2. Social psychiatry 3. Psychotherapy 4. Public Relation and Media 5. Art and Literature and Psychiatry 6. Ethics 7. Psycho-sexual Disorders 8. Education 9. Neuropsychiatry 10. Destigmatization 11. Geriatric psychiatry 12. Welfare 13. Epidemiology 14. Women 15. Young psychiatrists 16. Drug abuse and Addiction 17. Postgraduate training of psychiatrist 18. Meetings 19. Evaluations and Audit 7) These sections have weekly or biweekly sessions and some of them have sub-sections in other Provinces and cities and have their own seminars. 8) IPA has had strong relationship with Iranian medical council and other medical associations and Dr. Jalili was elected as a member of the board of Union of Iranian Medical Associations. 9) IPA has its own special flag and an anthem which was played for the first time during the last annual meeting in 2010. 10) The Representative of IPA (Dr. Hajati) has attended the 5 th SAARC psychiatric federation (SPF) and presented a paper (March 2011-Lahoor Pakistan). Dr. Jalili was a member of advisory committee of this congress. 11) IPA was a member of sponsors of 3th world congress of Asian psychiatry 2011 Melbourne 12) IPA has quarterly newsletters containing news and scientific articles. Report on Pakistan Psychiatric Society This report is being sent exactly as it was provided by Pakistan Psychiatric Society Department of psychiatry, PIMS is the largest tertiary care academic health facility of the federal territory. Both psychology and psychiatry depts. working under the supervision of Prof. Rizwan Taj, and his team includes trainee psychiatrists and psychologist. The Department holds many national level academic activities in the form of lectures, seminars and workshops both at national and international level. Activities 2009: Psychosocial support for Internally Displaced Persons Jul 2009: Under the supervision of Prof. Rizwan Taj various mental health teams were made and they were deployed there in camps of IDP's in province of Khyber Paktun Kha. Research collaboration between Department of psychiatry, PIMS and Prof. Farooq Naeem, University Southampton, UK. Conducted a study on how media affects mental health of public. Activities 2010: Dept. of psychiatry PIMS got two certificates of appreciation on presenting two papers and Certificate of nomination for WPA Young Psychiatrist program for participation in WPA Regional Meeting held at Dhaka, Bangladesh 21 st 23 rd Jan 2010. workshop on Suicide was conducted by Dr. Safi Afghan, Consultant psychiatrist, NHS, UK, 10 th Feb 2010.at PIMS
Dept. Organized seminar on Stress Management and Domestic Violence at PIMS by Dr. Batool, Consultant Psychiatrist, USA, on 10 th Mar 2010. Dr. Farida from UK gave an informative lecture on Depression and role of Anti-depressants in June. Seminar on Child Psychiatry by Prof. Anjum Bashir, Consultant Child Neuro psychiatrist, UK was held in Jul. Collaborative study protocol was made between Prof. Anjum Bashir and Prof. Rizwan Taj on " Post traumatic stress disorder, effect of blast on mental health of Islamic international university students after a year " Psychosocial Flood Relief Activities Jul - Oct: On instructions of Ministry of Health, Prof. Rizwan Taj constituted a team of mental health professionals. They were trained by local and international experts. Teams were then deployed in flood affected areas. Asima Mehboob Khan, senior psychologist of dept. of psychiatry was nominated by Ministry of Health to attend meeting by WHO on Inter-country meeting for finalization of strategic directions and actions for maternal, child and adolescent mental health care. In Egypt,26 th 28 th Jul 2010 Research was conducted on the topic Depressive symptomatology in care givers of patients with Alzheimer disease ". Two workshops on Primary mental health care were organized in collaboration with Kings College, UK, British council and THET. These were attended by psychiatrists and mental health professionals from rural and urban areas all over Pakistan. Pro. Rechel Jenkins (Head of Psychiatry, Kings College, and London) and Prof. Rizwan Taj gave trainings to two groups for five days each. Study was conducted on "INTEGRATING MENTAL HEALTH INTO PRIMARY CARE IN REMOTE RURAL AREAS OF PAKISTAN " International Psychiatric conference was organized by Pakistan Psychiatric society in collaboration with World Psychiatric Association. Event was held at Serena hotel and was attended by eminent mental health professionals all over the world. More than hundred papers were presented. Minister for health and chairperson PMDC Prof. Rizwana Chauhdry concluded the session by distributing shields among presenters and participants from Pakistan and abroad.
Activities 2011: 1. January 2011: Two workshops on Integration of Mental Health in Primary Care were conducted by Dept. of Psychiatry, PIMS in collaboration with king s college, London, British council and THET. Duration of workshop was five days for each group. Targeted group was lady health visitors, lady health workers, paramedical staff and General Practitioners from remote / rural areas of province of Khyber Pakhtunkha. One day workshop on CBT was organized by Dr. Farooq Naeem from UK. 2. February 2011: Mental Health assessment and evaluation of President and Prime Minister security Guards was conducted by the team of psychiatrist and psychologists. 3. March 2011: Research was conducted on the topic Integrating Mental Health into Primary Care in Remote and Rural Areas of Pakistan and the research paper was printed in the south Asian Journal of Psychiatry Volume 2, No. 1- March 2011. Asima Mehboob khan, Clinical Psychologist got certificate of participation on paper presentation in Madrid, Spain Mar, 2011. 4. April 2011: Two workshops on Whole School Approach were conducted by Dept. of Psychiatry, PIMS in Collaboration with king s College London, British Council, and THET. Duration of workshops was five days for each group. Targeted Group was Teachers of schools and colleges from different parts of the country. Speakers were Prof. Rachel Jenkins (UK), Mr. Stuart Lancashire (UK), Prof. Rizwan Taj, and Miss Asima Khan. 5. May 2011: Session on Child Psychology delivered by Dr. Ayesha from Australia.
6. June 2011: Second badge of Mental Health assessment of 30 security guards of Prime Minster and President was held. Workshop on CBT was conducted by Asima Mehboob Khan, senior clinical Psychologist / Psychotherapist on 30th Jun. It was attended by psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses and physicians from various local hospitals. Techniques on CBT were taught through slides, role plays and group work. Following topics were covered: Introduction to CBT :Essential Concepts and Techniques Used in Cognitive Therapy Criteria of selecting clients for CBT Session details for CBT ( Individual and Family sessions ) CBT techniques for Depression, Anxiety, OCD, PTSD etc CBT for Psychosis CBT for Relapse prevention and Relaxation Exercise May 2011: Pakistan Psychiatric Society formulate different committees on 1.
