1 Maudsley International a specialist mentalhealth and wellbeing consultancy

2 Maudsley International is an expert organisation that helps its clients develop and improve services and support for people who have mental health problems. This includes promoting good mental health and mental wellbeing. The organisation was set up in 2007 by the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King s College London and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM). This is an NHS organisation that provides a range of mental health services in the community and in hospitals, including the famous Maudsley and Bethlem Royal Hospitals. 3 Our clients We work with governments, providers of health services and employers in the public, private and voluntary sectors in many different countries. We forge long-term relationships with some clients, and complete discrete, one-off projects for others. In recent years, we have: l helped governments launch programmes that promote good mental health and wellbeing; l carried out a retrospective evaluation of a government programme that modernised mental health services (including the closure of institutions and the development of community-based services); l worked with a government to support the implementation of a five-year National Mental Health Strategy. This included the development of mental health programmes in schools, the development of anti-stigma campaigns, mental health awareness training for a range of health professionals, and the development of a research agenda; Our fees Maudsley International is a social enterprise and not-for-profit community interest company. 7 Learn and Observe Specialised Service Placements Learn and Observe' Specialised Service Placements are for small groups of experienced staff who want to increase their knowledge of managing and organising a specialist mental health service. The group activity takes place in London for a two to four week period: participants spend one week in the classroom with leading experts in the field, and then observe specialist teams at work. This activity is particularly suitable for groups of four to six professionals who are developing, or planning to develop, a new service, and already have resources allocated to do so. For the learning part of the placement, we organise a range of speakers clinicians and managers who are delivering specialist services to share their knowledge and experience. For the observational part, each group member is allocated a mentor who helps make sure they are given insight into all aspects of a service, including team meetings. With service users permission, members of the group observe consultations. The placement content varies according to the requirements of the group. Maudsley International Psychiatry Fellowships Maudsley International Psychiatry Fellowships give psychiatrists the chance to work and learn alongside junior doctors in specialist mental health services in south London. The Fellowships are particularly valuable for psychiatrists who are responsible for developing specialty services. The Fellowships last for one or two years and are organised in partnership with SLaM and the IoPPN. SLaM runs a range of specialist services. Previous Fellows have worked in child and adolescent mental health services, old age psychiatry and liaison psychiatry. During their stay in London, Maudsley International Psychiatry Fellows join a specialty training scheme and work in a number of different services for four days a week, and have access to lectures and events at the IoPPN. Fellows have a training supervisor and are given support by Maudsley International staff. Applicants must have been working as a psychiatrist for at least three years in their home country and must have obtained the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) level 7.5 across all domains, as required by the General Medical Council (GMC). 8 Maudsley International Mental Health Awareness Workshops Maudsley International Mental Health Awareness Workshops give up to 25 participants a better understanding of mental health. We give participants information about common mental health problems like depression and anxiety, and about serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. We discuss how best to support people and make sure they get any help they need. The interactive workshops are suitable for health professionals, primary care workers, NGO staff, human resource managers or simply team members and work colleagues in any organisation or company within the public or private sectors. Our workshop facilitators are expert clinicians who work in NHS services, and they use a combination of video, role play, discussion and group work. We can arrange a one-off workshop, or a series of workshops, tailored to the needs of the participants and the system, organisation or company in which they work. We ask clients to give us information about the role of participants and their workplace policies and procedures to make each workshop/series of workshops completely bespoke. At the end of each workshop/ series of workshops, we make recommendations about improvements that could be made to existing systems, and any future training needs that we identify. Maudsley International Best Practice Masterclasses At a Maudsley International Best Practice Masterclass, a panel of experts is invited to present the evidence about the chosen topic, and contribute their perspective to a discussion with participants. The discussion often focuses on the realities of putting evidence into practice. We can organise either a series of Masterclasses, or a standalone Masterclass, for up to 30 participants. They can be held in our client s home country, or in London. Our staff and associates have expertise and experience in many diverse areas, and we construct each Masterclass, or Masterclass series, to make sure our client s aims and objectives are met. We also tailor the Masterclasses to the participants experience, knowledge and skills. Examples of Best Practice Masterclasses we have organised include: l psychological competencies for addiction services; l mental health training for nurses with no previous experience in this field; l continuing professional development for experienced senior psychiatrists (0) info@maudsleyinternational.com

9 Maudsley International can help governments, community-based organisations and employers take action to improve the mental wellbeing of citizens, service users and employees. We can share with you our knowledge of international evidence, and our experience of putting the evidence into practice. We use two techniques that help promote mental wellbeing, both in the community and in the workplace the Mental Wellbeing Impact Assessment and Wheel of Wellbeing activities.

10 The Mental Wellbeing Impact Assessment The Mental Wellbeing Impact Assessment (MWIA) is a process that helps you gauge the likely impact both positive and negative of a new policy, a proposed development or project on people s mental wellbeing. By undertaking an assessment, you are able to take action to mitigate any potential negative impact. The process includes working with representatives of groups of people who are likely to be affected by the proposal or policy. An MWIA screening is a standalone process that enables you to make an initial assessment and decide whether to then carry out a full assessment. A screening can be completed by a small group of people normally those making the proposal within about two-and-a-half hours. The full assessment is a much lengthier process. Representatives of all groups likely to be affected are invited to a workshop to debate potential impacts and co-produce a plan to lessen any negative impacts. In addition, you separately collect information about the population likely to be affected, and any existing evidence about the likely impact of your proposal. What Maudsley International offers l Introduction to the MWIA workshops to help you decide if the process can help your organisation. l Training to use the whole toolkit and carry out a full assessment. The eight-day training includes three days of theory and a practical handson facilitated assessment. In the UK, this training is accredited by the Royal Society of Public Health. l Training to carry out an MWIA screening. The three-day training includes classroom-based theory and an opportunity to practise using the screening tool in a real-life situation, with support from your trainers. l We can teach you how to train other people to carry out an MWIA screening. The two-day training includes theory and an opportunity to practise using the screening tool in groups. Certified trainers can pass on their skills, free of charge, time and time again. l You can commission Maudsley International to undertake an MWIA screening/full assessment for you. 11 Wheel of Wellbeing activities The Wheel of Wellbeing (WoW) is an easy-to-use technique that prompts individuals, communities and companies to engage in, and create, activities that nurture mental wellbeing. The wheel consists of six domains that are associated with actions proven by research to contribute to wellbeing. The domains and actions are: l People (connect) l Body (be active) l Place (take notice) l Mind (keep learning) l Spirit (give) l Planet (care) A number of activities have already been developed to support each domain, and individuals and community groups are encouraged to create their own activities and share them through the Wheel of Wellbeing website. Many of the activities are based on the principles of positive psychology. What Maudsley International offers l One-day introductory Wheel of Wellbeing workshops, or a two-hour introductory taster session, to help you decide if the Wheel of Wellbeing and associated activities are right for your community/workplace. l Training about the importance of wellbeing, the principles of positive psychology, the concept of the Wheel of Wellbeing and how to develop and adapt WoW activities for your own community/workplace, and incorporate WoW principles into professional practice. The training was developed by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and Maudsley International is licensed to deliver it either over an eight-week period, or during an intensive four days. At the end of the course, participants are licensed for a 12-month period (by Maudsley International) to train other people about wellbeing (participants cannot charge for this training). They have access to specially-designed Maudsley International resources to help them do this.
