Lewsey Children s Centre and Nursery: how we help families What is Lewsey Children s Centre? Lewsey Children s Centre is a place where children under five years of age and their families can access help and support from teams of professionals including managing childrens behaviour parenting skills, supporting children with additional needs, ante and postnatal support, healthy living, play and learning - and more. A one stop shop for families. Centre Objectives To provide high quality childcare and education for children primarily below statutory school age. Work in partnership with parents to help children to learn and develop. Add to the life and well-being of its local community and offer children and their parents a service that promotes equality and values diversity. We offer: information on local services parent support with questions regarding parenting issues e.g. behaviour management, sleep, toileting, fussy eating, how to stop the use of a dummy access to education and careers information support for adults and children who have disabilities. stop smoking advice access to health visiting breastfeeding advice healthy eating advice. Lewsey Children s Centre and Nursery: what we offer DIDDY DANCERS MONDAY (please contact the Children Centre for dates) Our Family Worker runs the group and will take you and your children on a journey where music, story and movement will be explored. The group promotes healthy lifestyles and encourages children to use language to describe their experiences and how their bodies are moving. This is a fun activity where children are encouraged to express themselves through physical activity. Opportunities are given to parent to borrow C.D s so they can enjoy new activities at home. STAY AND PLAY GROUP MONDAY 9.30 11.00am (TERM TIME ONLY) Come along and let your babies and children explore a variety of stimulating activities. Our group is well resourced with a wide variety of equipment. The Early Years Foundation Stage provides us with the framework that enables us to offer the best opportunities for you and your child s learning. Everyone is welcome and we encourage you to join in the fun. We are fortunate to have the support of partners who are available to offer information to parents throughout the year. Healthy snacks are provided followed by song time with opportunities for outside play. TIME OUT FOR PARENTS TUESDAY (please contact Children Centre for next course) The five week parenting course is facilitated by our Family Worker and the Children s Centre Outreach worker. The aim of the course is to increase your confidence as a parent, develop your relationship with your child and help prevent behaviour problems developing. We share ideas on developing emotional security and raising self esteem. Learn how to manage common behaviour problems, discuss safety issues and encourage mutual support whilst making new friends. We acknowledge that children are all different and unique; attending this course may give you the confidence in trying new techniques and become a confident parent. BABY CLINIC TUESDAYS 2.00-4.00PM This clinic is facilitated by NHS Health visitors. Parents and carers may access the Health visitors for advice and guidance, to talk over any worries or problems and to have children weighed and measured. Please bring your red book with you. No appointment necessary. 6 7
Lewsey Children s Centre and Nursery: what we offer YOUNG PARENTS GROUP WEDNESDAY 12.00 3.00pm The group is run by our Family Worker and the Family Worker from Pastures Way Nursery and Children s Centre. Young parents between the ages of fifteen to twenty two years are welcome with their children as well as those who are pregnant. The parents are supported by two mentors from Greenhouse Mentoring who are able to offer extra support. A weekly activity program offers opportunities for personal development including education, health advice, and information from the Children s Centre partners. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to become involved in the running of the sessions. Whilst attending the group parents can make new friendships and support each other, and are given opportunities to explore and play with their children. 8 9
Lewsey Children s Centre and Nursery: what we offer Every Child Matters FAMILY WORKER DROP IN SESSION WEDNESDAYS 4.00-6.00PM We offer parents and carers the opportunity to drop in and talk over any worries, issues or problems with our Family Worker. Our Family Worker does work full time and will always try to see anyone as and when needed, but this is a time especially set aside for parents and carers. Please ask at reception if you want to use this service. Lewsey Children s Centre services are planned around the five Every Child Matters Outcomes Which are universal ambitions for every child and young person. Improving outcomes for all children and families underpin the work of the centre: being healthy FIRST TIME PARENTS - FRIDAY 10.00-12.00pm The group is facilitated by a Health Visitor and our Family Worker. For the first hour parents have access to weighing facilities and any questions they have with regards to baby s health, feeding and development. There are opportunities to speak informally with visiting professionals in our friendly, relaxed setting. Topics such as weaning, child safety and oral health are discussed. We rotate six weeks health promotion and then five weeks Infant Massage. The group offers opportunities for parents to form new friendships and give support to one another. DADS and MALE CARERS mornings (please contact the Children s Centre for dates) Each term we like to encourage fathers and male carers to join their children in activities and share breakfast on a Saturday morning. A variety of activities are planned so that the children can take items home after a morning of fun. It s a great opportunity for dads and male carers to get together and have a chat and share their experiences as fathers / carers. staying safe enjoying and achieving making a positive contribution achieving economic well-being. 10 11
