Over the course of his life, LeRoy authored more than 270 papers. Some of his major contributions to the understanding of scleroderma included his study of fibroblasts derived from scleroderma patients, as well as his research on vascular endothelium. In 1995, LeRoy was appointed chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Medical University of South Carolina. In 2000, he was recognized as Distinguished University Professor, the highest faculty honor awarded at the university. Other subjects that are addressed include LeRoy s interest in scleroderma research and awards he received throughout his life. The

MSS 984 E. Carwile LeRoy Collection 2 records also pertain to his role as MUSC faculty (e. g. memoranda to university faculty) and as the department chair of Immunology and Microbiology. Some correspondence and articles relating to the Alexander von Humboldt Association of America are included. The Research series,1961?-2002, 2 cubic feet, primarily contains journal reprints, articles and drafts by E. Carwile LeRoy. Also included are handwritten notes, correspondence, and slides. There are three sub-series divided by topic: Scleroderma, History of Medicine, and Miscellaneous. Scleroderma research contains journal reprints, drafts of articles, and a few handwritten notes by LeRoy. General research provides an overview of systemic sclerosis its classification, subsets and pathogenesis. The signs, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease are discussed, and some case studies are included. The relationship between renal failure and scleroderma, as well as collagen synthesis by fibroblasts is documented. In addition, endothelial injury in scleroderma is discussed. The Scleroderma records also include some articles about Paul Klee, a famous artist who was diagnosed with systemic sclerosis, as well as a booklet about the medical diseases of illustrious persons. LeRoy s research on Raynaud s phenomenon and its relationship to scleroderma is also documented. The History of Medicine is another area of research and it contains journal articles and drafts, correspondence, photographs, and some slides. In particular, the History of Medicine series is largely devoted to the study of William Osler, a Canadian-born physician who worked at John Hopkins University and revolutionized the medical education system.
