Reasons to buy Wide ranging effects Internal and external lubricants Technical expertise Speciality additives for PVC At the heart of better plastics
Speciality additives for PVC Croda offers a comprehensive range of internal and external additives to improve the properties of PVC and other polymers. As well as being high performance lubricants, the range of additives from Croda can also be used effectively as dispersion aids for pigments, anti-static and anti- fogging additives and speciality plasticisers in various systems. An additive can be classed as either an internal or external lubricant each providing different characteristics during polymer processing. Choosing an additive depends upon the polymer formulation, processing technique and final application. Dosing levels are usually between 0.5% and 2% inclusion and can be added directly to the resin or via a suitable masterbatch. This is dependent upon the formulation, final application and effect required. External additives External additives provide metal release and particulate flow properties in the melt. External additives work at the metal / polymer surface interface to reduce friction to enable the polymer to slide. They are active in both the melt phase and the solid phase and can help deliver: l Lower friction between the melt and processing surface l Improved mold release l Reduced adhesion of resin Internal additives Internal additives are designed to be highly compatible with the PVC polymer matrix, helping reduce friction from within the melt. They are active in the molten phase and can help deliver: l Lower melt viscosity l Improved flow l Better mold filling l Reduced energy consumption 2
Lubrication / Mold Release Virgin PVC generates high frictional heat during processing which can lead to stability problems and poor performance. Choosing a PVC lubricant from the range below will help improve flow by lowering melt viscosity and reducing friction between the melt and machine surfaces. As well as improving polymer performance, our products are designed to optimise processes by improving flow and aiding mold release. Choosing the right additive for your polymer can improve your polymer process. Key Benefits l Increased output efficiency l Minimised machine wear l Reduced energy consumption l Consistent mold release l Improved surface finish l Less rejects and waste Physical form at 25 C Raw material origin Internal/ External Primary effect Atmer TM 121 Atmer 1006 * Glycerol ester Glycerol ester Liquid Liquid Non-vegetable Vegetable Internal Internal Friction, dispersion aid Atmer 1010 Glycerol ester Paste Vegetable Internal Effective internal additive particularly useful in plasticised PVC film providing good flow, surface finish and clarity. Anti-static PVC is a good insulator and has the ability to support high static charge. The Atmer range of anti-static additives can be added to the polymer in the melt phase or via masterbatch to give anti-static benefits during processing and handling. Key Benefits l Decreased static build-up in the polymer l Decreased attraction of dust, leading to superior quality and appearance of the part l Reduced risk of electric shock to employees and consumers Control Atmer 129 Atmer 154 Figure 1: Anti-static effect of Atmer 129 and Atmer 154 in flexible PVC at 3 phr Physical form at 25 C Raw material origin Atmer 129 Glycerol ester Microbead Vegetable Anti-static additive for flexible PVC Atmer 154 Alkoxylated fatty acid ester UV Protection Liquid Vegetable Internal anti-static additive for flexible PVC Atmer 190 Alkyl sulphonate Pastille Synthetic Anti-static additive for non-transparent, rigid PVC In sheet, film and bottle packaging, the unique patented technology of the Solasorb TM range provides superior dispersion and UV protection. Unlike the commonly used organic UV absorbers, the stable metal oxide dispersions are proven to deliver low migration and permanent UV protection. The use of Solasorb can aid colour dispersion and preserve colour intensity over time, helping to maintain a constant colour of an article even after prolonged exposure to sun light. Key Benefits l Superior UV absorption and colour protection when compared to metal oxide powders l Reduced re-agglomeration due to stable optimised dispersion l UV absorption in the same order as organic UV absorbers l Permanent, non-migratory and non-degrading Physical form at 25 C Raw material origin Solasorb UV 100 TiO 2 dispersion White liquid Inorganic mineral Absorbance in the 240-360 nm range Solasorb UV 200 ZnO dispersion White liquid Inorganic mineral Wide ranging UV absorbance 4
Anti-Fog The Atmer range of anti-fog additives work by migration to the polymer surface allowing condensed water droplets to spread into a continuous and uniform transparent layer on the film. The range includes additives for both food wrap and agricultural films. Food Wrap l Improved transparency of the packaging and durability of the contents l Improved presentation of food and customer appeal Agricultural films l Improved light transmission resulting in higher plant growth rates l Reduced burning of plants and crop spoilage l Reduced water dripping Physical form at 25 C Raw material origin Atmer 103 Sorbitan ester Microbead Vegetable Non-vegetable * Recommended for use in agricultural films Atmer 121 Glycerol ester Liquid Non-vegetable Recommended for use in food wrap Atmer 645 * Proprietary blend Liquid Vegetable/Synthetic Recommended for use in food wrap Atmer 674 * Proprietary blend Liquid Vegetable/Synthetic Recommended for use in food wrap Atmer 1006 Glycerol ester Liquid Vegetable Recommended for use in food wrap Atmer 1010 Glycerol ester Paste Vegetable Cling in food wrap, used in conjunction with Atmer 116 * Only available in USA Only available in Asia 5

Case St udy delivers coated fabrics for oilfield protective clothing Croda were approached by a customer looking for a plasticiser to use in coated fabrics in oilfield protective clothing. The customer had experienced problems with traditional phthalates migrating out of the fabric when in contact with oils causing the fabric coating to crack dramatically, which reduced the working life of the clothing. From the table below the customer was able to identify 3155 and 3114 as the products with the best oil extraction resistance. As a secondary parameter the customer also stated that they would like good detergent resistance, as the items of clothing could come into contact with them during cleaning. Again using the table they were able to differentiate between 3155 and 3114 based on detergent extraction with 3155 showing improved detergent extraction resistance when compared to 3114.
