FREEDOM STARTS WITH THE FIRST STEP
ADDICTION IS A REAL DISEASE Addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the addicted individual and to those around him or her. Although the initial decision to take drugs is voluntary for most people, the brain changes that occur over time challenge an addicted person s self-control and hamper his or her ability to resist intense impulses to take drugs. Herein lies the disease of addiction. At Addiction Campuses, we hear a lot from people who don t think addiction is a disease. It s a choice to drink or use drugs, they say. It sure looks like that at first, doesn t it? Just like diseases such as diabetes and cancer - which can begin with lifestyle choices of high sugar or fatty diets - addiction can also appear to begin as a choice.. And just like you can t quit having cancer, you can t just quit having an addiction. Addiction is a true medical disease and can be treated with success.
TEACHING LIFE SKILLS means you don t go back to your old life, you learn how to live the life you deserve. We often see that addicts don t only forget how to enjoy life, they often forget how to live it. Many come to us without having lived it well the first time around. Because of this, we have specific programs designed to re-acclimate the recovering addict back into a balanced, productive life. Rather than treat a person for 30 days and move them along, our practical life skills programs recognize the need for basic training such as how to interview for a job, how to open a bank account and write a check, as well as basic rules for self-sufficiency, independence and educational support. Our treatment network is growing every day which is the reason we can provide a wide diversification of care, unique addiction treatment programs and some of the best recovery success rates in the United States. Our many services include: n Intervention assistance n Medical detoxification n Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) n Residential / inpatient treatment n Outpatient treatment n Addiction Counseling n Ongoing recovery care

OUR ADDICTION TREATMENT PROGRAMS Our addiction treatment programs uses proven therapy methods to addiction - for life. Adventure Therapy Adventure Therapy, also called Wilderness Therapy and Experiential Therapy, uses varying techniques and environments to bring about change in the individual. These include cooperative games, problem solving initiatives, trust building activities, high adventure (zip lining); and campus expeditions (fishing, wilderness activities). Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) DBT is a cognitive therapy that has been proven to work for patients struggling with addiction and other co-occurring mental illnesses. Other studies have found show that DBT is superior to regular addiction treatment in reducing high risk behaviors in patients. Group Therapy Group addiction therapy is a very powerful therapeutic method wherein clients are exposed to others that are struggling with similar challenges. It reinforces the notion that a client is not alone or is the only one with these problems and helps them discover that they can forgive others who are very similar to them, which leads them down the road to forgive themselves. Individual Therapy Our individual counseling sessions are designed to comfort the client while addressing the specific pains and struggles they are experiencing. This allows us to teach coping skills, relationship building strategies, rebuild self-confidence and begin to change negative behaviors into positive outcomes. Art/Expressive Therapy Art/Expressive therapy speaks to the creative process involved in expressing one s self artistically and can help people to resolve issues. By participating in activities like painting, sculpting, drawing, psychodrama clients will better understand how to manage their behaviors and feelings, reduce stress, and improve self-esteem and awareness.
THE LODGE The Lodge is where our residential clients sleep, eat, reflect and play. Male and female clients are treated to the simple comforts of home and can expect clean, restful and secure accommodations, nutritious meals and a programming schedule for each day that includes individual counseling, group counseling, trauma therapy, adventure therapy, art/expressive therapy, and proven addiction treatment method - dialectical behavior therapy - and more. Our Lodge is kept clean by a staff on a regular basis but clients are expected to manage their own rooms, clean up and materials organization. Meals, snacks, and drinks are available all day long in The Lodge and clients have access to them between classes, activities and free time.

PAWS Your loved one WILL experience Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome or PAWS. The Six Types of PAWS Symptoms: Emotional overreactions or numbness - As one withdraws from the emotional insulation that substance abuse provides, they may have difficulty processing emotions. They are more likely to either overreact to situations or to completely shut down and feel nothing. Inability to think clearly - Recovering individuals experience an inability to concentrate, difficulty with abstract concepts, and rigid and/or repetitive thinking patterns. Memory problems - In recovery, individuals are in the process of learning new skills and behaviors, but may have trouble immediately remembering what they have learned. Sleep disturbances - Individuals in the post-acute phase may continue to experience some physical symptoms of withdrawal. Sleep problems may be due to disturbing dreams and well as an inability to fall or stay asleep. Physical coordination problems - Physical coordination issues may include dizziness, impaired hand-eye coordination, and slower reflexes. Stress sensitivity - Recovering addicts in the post-acute withdrawal phase are usually very easily overwhelmed. Care should be taken not to overload them with too much information at this point. What can you do to help ease the symptoms of PAWS? Expect them to complain about their physical pain and their emotional stress. Expect them to forget. Expect them to be unusually sensitive, defensive and scared. Expect them to have periods of intense emotions, paranoia, sleep struggles and fuzzy thoughts. Above all, remember that each person must work through it in their own time. Nervous system damage typically requires from six to 24 months for recovery. Many people experience PAWS symptoms at regular intervals for up to TWO YEARS, including 30-day, 60-day, 90-day, 120-day, 180-day, and 1- and 2-year sobriety dates. Research has also shown that some drugs take longer to recover from than others. Be patient, be loving and trust in the process of recovery. Your loved one can and will get better, for life.
