Mercury is used is highly processed and purified, making it nontoxic. Studies have found that pills often contain both mercuric sulfide and metallic mercury, and adverse reactions have been reported with chronic use. Unclear whether the adverse reactions occur with pure mercuric sulfide as well, or only when metallic mercury is present. Since many of the preparations have not been analyzed, it is difficult to know what form of mercury is in a given pill. In short, the modern therapeutic use of mercuric sulfide is controversial and should be approached with caution under the advice of an experienced practitioner. 6 2
