Sh" - poisoning Symptoms of acute overdose: CNS disturbance with nervousness, a metallic taste in the mouth, swollen gums, poor appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, tremor, sexual dysfunction, and liver and kidney damage. Treatment of acute overdose: Seek emergency care for gastric lavage. Ingestion of milk, egg whites, or Lu Dou soup is advisable, as is detoxification with the formula Huang Lian Jie Du Tang plus Jin Yin Hua and Tu Fu Ling. Symptoms of cumulative toxicity: Headaches, vertigo, agitation, insomnia, tremors, spasms, deafness, restlessness, and behavioral changes such as depression. 5 Treatment of cumulative toxicity: Ingest 10-15g of black or green tea 1-2 times daily to facilitate mercury elimination. Alternatively, you can ingest a decoction of 250g of Tu Fu Ling at room temperature once a day for 10 days. You may repeat this after 3-4 days. Zh! Sh" modern usage Rarely used in modern TCM due to concerns of mercury poisoning Ayurvedic system: Small doses used to promote health & longevity, treat nervous disorders, heal bone fractures. Mercury is used is highly processed and purified, making it nontoxic. Studies have found that pills often contain both mercuric sulfide and metallic mercury, and adverse reactions have been reported with chronic use. Unclear whether the adverse reactions occur with pure mercuric sulfide as well, or only when metallic mercury is present. Since many of the preparations have not been analyzed, it is difficult to know what form of mercury is in a given pill. In short, the modern therapeutic use of mercuric sulfide is controversial and should be approached with caution under the advice of an experienced practitioner. 6 2
