1 Soothing the Troubled Spirit with Blue Poppy Originals Formulas with Honora Lee Wolfe Our ongoing interest in spirit Western practitioners of Chinese medicine have always had more interest in diseases of the essence spirit than one sees in China. All of us may have different definitions of what we mean by spirit. So 1

2 Definitions of Spirit in CM Spirit refers to the outward manifestations of the body s life activities, including the manifestations of both normal physiological and patho-physiological activities Brightness of eyes; Color & luster of the complexion Strength & clarify of speech Regularity of respiration Good appetite and digestive functions Ability to think, act, and speak clearly and normally Definitions of Spirit Spirit is heart qi when heart qi functions as psyche Spirit is nothing other than an accumulation of qi in the heart constructed and nourished by yin and blood (*adequate blood allows the heart to do its job of housing the spirit) 2

3 Acupuncture and Essence- Spirit disorders. Acupuncture has an immediate and visible ability to rectify the qi of various organs and tissues in the body. As such, in any essence-spirit disorder that involves mostly recifying qi, acupuncture is greatly helpful. 5 Modified 11 Flavors Warm the Gallbladder Therapeutic actions: supplements the heart and fortifies the spleen, courses the liver and resolves depression, clears heat and transforms phlegm, quiets the spirit. Possible indications: Insomnia, disturbing dreams or nightmares, heart palpitations, anxiety, depression, PMS, indigestion, sinusitis, headache and TMJ syndrome, plum pit qi, easily startled. Modified 11 Flavors Warm the Gallbladder Ye Jiao Teng and Yuan Zhi nourishes the heart and calms the spirit Suan Zao Ren does the above and also nourishes liver blood, stops abnormal sweating, clears vacuity heat to some extent as well. Zhu Ru, Ban Xia, and Chen Pi resolve phlegm and clear phlegm-heat, aided by Huang Lian. 5

6 Clear & Calm Therapeutic actions: Fortifies the spleen and boosts qi, resolves liver depression and out-thrusts heat, downbears heart fire, seeps dampness, calms the heart and quiets and spirit. Possible indications: There may be hot urinary symptoms, but also irritability, anxiety, palpitations, insomnia, restlessness, possible red-tipped tongue with sores on the tip. Clear & Calm Dan Zhu Ye is specific for clearing heat from the heart, again helped by a little dose of Huang Lian and Sheng Ma. It also addresses hot painful urination. Chi Shao with Bai Shao stop pain when there is both blood vacuity and stasis at the same time. Along with Sheng Di Huang it also clears heat Deng Xin Cao clears heat from the heart and with Che Qian Zi helps drain damp heat through urination and stops hot, urgent, painful urination. 6

7 Resolve and Stabilize Therapeutic Actions: courses the liver and rectifies the qi, quickens the blood and transforms stasis, clears heat, nourishes the blood, and quiets the spirit. Possible indications: recalcitrant, nonhealing insomnia, possibly emotional depression and anxiety Use in pregnant women ONLY if the patient s pattern warrants it. Resolve and Stabilize E Jiao and Suan Zao Ren both nourish blood; one the liver and one the heart. E Jiao enriches kidney yin and Suan Zao Ren enriches heart yin. Dan Shen both quickens and nourishes the blood and clears heat from the blood layer. He Huan Pi also quickens blood, but at the same time calms the spirit. A small dose of Chuan Niu Xi and Chuan Xiong further quickens the blood. Xia Ku Cao cools liver heat and Chai Hu relieves the surface, together out-thrusting depressive heat. Long Gu with Hu Po quiet the spirit and stop palpitations. 7
