How do we choose the Lecturers? I asked Sue Drummond to explain how the lecturers are selected. Sue has been the Chair of the Lecturers Committee for several years and has a great knowledge of the way it s done: Overseas lecturers are selected and invited to tour two years in advance. The Lecturers Committee meets each February to decide on possible lecturers for two years hence. These are chosen from Arts Society Lecturers and from our own list of independent lecturers. The Lecturers Committee is assisted by our Overseas Area Representative in the Arts Society who listens to and chats to lecturers at the annual Arts Society Directory Day where all the Arts Society lecturers come to sell themselves to the UK societies. She sends a list of recommended lecturers to help with the decision-making process. The committee also have access to the Arts Society database of over 350 lecturers they use this to look at 2minute videos by lecturers and choose lecturers by topic etc. They also keep records on all past lecturers and these people are considered for further tours. The lecturers committee each select 30+ lecturers and then the final choice of 30+ possibles is made after much discussion. The lecturers must cover a broad spectrum of art, decorative art and other topics and the Lecturers Committee tries hard to get a good mix of different topics. The chairman then has to work out who will fit in each circuit, contact the Arts Society for latest information on performance and then contact lecturers to ascertain their availability and interest until all 18 places on the three circuits are full, all the while making sure that the mix of topics is to the right formula. (2 art, 2 decorative art, 2 other). Once this is done the tours are confirmed and contracts go out to lecturers one year in advance of their tour. The Lecturers Committee chairman has to also find replacement lecturers in the event of cancellations. Thank You Sue. You and the Lecturers Committee do a great job. DAY time Lectures Now Thursday 10.30 The time of the lectures in 2018 has changed. We are now having a day lecture at the more convenient time of 10.30 am. Time to Farewell: Being a part of the ADFAS Committee is a big, but a very special commitment. This year we farewell three very familiar faces Chairman: Keith Hawken Lecturer & Raffle Co-ordinator : Noela Rogers Afternoon Co-ordinator: Meg White All three have been members of ADFAS and members of the Committee for many years. They have worked tirelessly but always with good humour. Keith has been a calm, hardworking Chairman. He has had a particularly hard year but continued in his role with energy, humour and commitment and now deserves to step down and enjoy the next stage of retirement. He has signalled his willingness to help me as incoming Chair and I appreciate this offer so much. Thank you Keith. Noela has also had a challenging year and hasn t been able to get to lectures. Noela we ve missed you. Noela has been the face of ADFAS the first person the Lecturers see when they arrive in Brisbane off the bus from Byron. She has always been calm and friendly as she helped the lecturers settle into their accommodation. She also took on the Young Arts Raffle and encouraged you to buy tickets each week at the afternoon lecture. Thank You Noela. Meg has been our afternoon lecture co-ordinator. In recent years Meg worked through illness - always with a smile and with an energy to be admired.. She knows your name, has greeted your guests and arranged your afternoon tea with our caterers. Meg you are always welcome back to the front desk. Thank you Meg. We are losing these great committee members. BUT Do you want to get to know how ADFAS really works? Do you like the idea of helping out? Have you got great ideas? We need a some new Committee members. I have spoken to a few people who have shown interest in joining our committee. If you want to have a chat about joining please phone me. Fran Maitland 0418715345

Next year I will be organising attendance at one of rehearsals followed by lunch. Keep an eye out for this Special event in 2018. Sponsorship: As a Committee we have been exploring ways to off set increasing costs. Sponsorship of lectures, morning teas, gallery visits or our new Art Competition could help us - and help our sponsors.
