Breast Cancer Services

World Class, Comprehensive Care University of Colorado Hospital has the only multidisciplinary breast care clinics in the region. CU Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the Rocky Mountain Region and one of only 41 centers in the country. Centers such as these are designated for providing the best cancer care while leading the latest in research and education. Multidisciplinary Cancer Care A team of specialists for each patient. At the CU Cancer Center at University of Colorado Hospital, our patients have access to clinical teams assembled specifically for each type of cancer-and we bring these specialists to you, often at one location and in one visit. As true subspecialists, our team treats the most common and rarest types of breast cancer. This in-depth level of experience combined with our multidisciplinary approach to cancer means better outcomes for our patients. The care each patient receives at University of Colorado Hospital is extremely comprehensive. Depending on your situation, your Breast Center care program will include a combination of our care team members:» Medical Oncologists» Specialists in Cancer Genetics» Radiation Oncologists» Mammography Technologists» Surgical Oncologists» Specialists in Cancer Survivorship» Plastic Surgeons» Integrative Medicine Specialists in acupuncture, massage therapy, nutrition and other alternative therapies» Radiologists» Nurse Practitioners» Nurses» Social Workers and Counselors» Physical Therapists with specialty certification in lymphedema management CU Cancer Center is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). The NCCN is a not-for-profit alliance of 26 of the world s leading cancer centers and is dedicated to improving the quality and effectiveness of cancer care. Compared to both state and regional data, the five-year survival rates for all stages of breast cancer are higher at the University of Colorado Hospital and CU Cancer Center. Internationally recognized for developing new standards of care through leadership in cutting edge medicine. We conduct more breast cancer research than any other cancer center in the region. This means access to the latest in treatment and new drugs for our patients. U.S. News and World Report has consistently ranked University of Colorado Hospital as having one of the top cancer specialties in the nation. In addition, the publication has ranked UCH as the #1 cancer hospital in the state for several years. The Diane O Connor Thompson Breast Center at University of Colorado Hospital is named in honor of a woman of great courage and heart who fought her own battle with breast cancer. Although Diane O Connor Thompson lost her battle on Thanksgiving Day in 1999 at 44 years of age, this mother, wife and successful businesswoman continues to inspire her friends, family and the staff at the University of Colorado Hospital.

Clinical Trials Patients at University of Colorado Cancer Center have the opportunity to participate in studies using the most promising new developments in prevention, screening and early detection of breast cancer. Our physicians understand the science behind the latest cancer treatments because they often lead their development. As Translational Researchers, our physicians directly apply scientific discoveries to patient care, moving the latest in cancer treatment from the laboratory bench to the patient bedside. The Pink Life Saver A Different Kind of Experience Patients with a new diagnosis or those seeking a second opinion meet with members of our expert breast cancer team. As the only clinic of its kind in the region, this multidisciplinary center offers a unique patient-centered experience. Our team of medical, surgical or radiation oncologists and our radiologist and pathologist meet, discuss your case, and then work together to provide and manage a treatment plan designed specifically for you. From your first consultation and throughout your treatment, expert cancer care is directed by your personal medical or surgical oncologist. All our physicians have been fellowship trained, completing advanced clinical study in oncology. The Pink Life Saver, the mobile mammography coach operated by University of Colorado Hospital, is a reality thanks to Men for the Cure, King Soopers, University of Colorado Hospital Foundation and the University of Colorado Foundation. The mission of the Pink Life Saver and the University of Colorado Hospital Breast Imaging Department is to provide convenient and easy access for women to have their annual mammogram. The American Cancer Society has identified lack of convenience and time as the key reasons why women do not get this life saving annual exam.well, NO MORE EXCUSES. We are right here in your parking lot to provide the latest digital mammography technology to your employees. Diagnosis and Treatment Nurse Navigator Program Together, our physicians have an expertise in a variety of options for care and use multiple techniques to diagnose and treat breast cancer. With locations at the state-of-the-art Anschutz Medical Campus and the Lone Tree Breast Center, CU Cancer Center patients benefit from the latest and most advanced facilities and technology available in the region. The Nurse Navigator Program at University of Colorado Hospital offers personalized guidance for our breast cancer patients. Our Nurse Navigator meets with each patient and becomes a personal guide during the process of care planning and treatment. While the team develops a specific treatment plan to meet each patient s unique needs, our Nurse Navigator is there to make introductions, help explain unfamiliar terms and concepts, and answer the patient s questions along the way. 3D Mammography University of Colorado Hospital is one of the only places in the state to offer the new 3D mammography using Hologic Selenia Dimensions technology as our standard of care. This state-of-the-art technology uses multiple low-dose images at multiple angles to produce a series of one millimeter slices that create a 3D reconstruction of the breast, providing increased visualization for the detection of breast cancer and reducing the need to return for additional imaging. Current American Cancer Society guidelines recommend screening mammograms for women every year beginning at age 40. Digital Breast Tomosynthesis, or 3D Digital, is performed as your routine annual screening mammogram. For even more convenience, our breast imaging centers offer same day, walk-in mammograms with no appointment necessary.
