Presenter Biographies Dr Shyan Vijayasekaran ENT Surgeon Associate Professor Shyan Vijayasekaran MBBS, FRACS grew up in Perth, studied at the University of Western Australia and graduated with distinctions in Medicine and Surgery. He subsequently trained in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery in London and Perth. Shyan completed a Fellowship in Paediatric Otolaryngology with Professor Robin Cotton at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, University of Cincinnati, USA. He is one of the few international graduates of this prestigious programme. Shyan was awarded the Charles Ferguson prize by the American Society of Paediatric Otolaryngology in 2005. Shyan works at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children and several other institutions in Perth. He is a Clinical Associate Professor affiliated with the School of Surgery and the school of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Western Australia. His clinical and research interests included disorders of airway, voice, swallowing, management of hearing loss and chronic otitis media. He has published over 40 papers in peer reviewed journals, chapters in textbooks and has been an invited speaker at several national and international meetings. Rachel Harvey Dental Therapist Rachel Harvey is a WA trained Dental Therapist with over 2 decades in the industry. She currently works in General Dental practice, also at a Specialist Oral Medicine practice and she is invited to present to the 3rd year Oral Health Therapy students, every year, on sleep apnoea. Rachel's special interests include dental assessment and management of sleep apnoea, temporomandibular muscle and joint pain and orofacial pain management, she is keenly interested in postural and Myofunctional considerations in the prevention of developing malocclusions and also the management of tmj pain and headaches. Rachel is an active member of the ADOHTAWA committee and has held various positions. She is passionate about raising the profile of our profession and also encouraging oral health professionals to adopt a treatment philosophy that looks beyond the mouth for total health care in a team approach with our medical and specialist colleagues. Dr Timothy Johnston Specialist Paediatric Dentist Timothy Johnston graduated with his BDSc from the University of Western Australia in 1989. He practiced in general dentistry for two years before moving to Melbourne to complete his Master s Degree in Paediatric Dentistry from the University of Melbourne. Following graduation, he obtained his Fellowship in the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, Academy of Laser Dentistry and awarded a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International in recognition of his voluntary work. Tim has been in Specialist Paediatric Dentistry since 1994, 19 years in Partnership with Peter Gregory until retirement, then opening ikids. Tim holds appointments as Consultant Paediatric Dentist at The Princess Margaret Hospital for Children, visiting Senior lecturer at The University of Western Australia. He has held a number of advisory positions including the Australian Dental Association, Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the Australian Breastfeeding Association. He is a former WA branch President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Dentistry and is currently the federal President of the Society. Dr Johnston s interest in minimal intervention dentistry started many years ago when introducing lasers and microscopy to his practice. Tim has since has obtained extensive experience in their use in paediatric dentistry, lecturing nationally and internationally and contributed to textbooks on this subject. Clin A/Prof Ramesh Balasubramaniam Oral Medicine Specialist BSc, BDSc (UWA), MS, Cert Orofacial Pain (UKy), Cert Oral Medicine (UPenn), ABOP, FOMAA, FADI, FPFA Ramesh Balasubramaniam graduated with a BDSc from the University of Western Australia in 2000 and subsequently practiced general dentistry. In 2006, he completed a certificate and Master of Science degree in Orofacial Pain at the University of Kentucky. While at the University of Kentucky, Ramesh also underwent training in the field of Dental Sleep Medicine. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain. In addition, Ramesh completed specialist training in Oral Medicine as well as a Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Geriatrics at the University of Pennsylvania in 2008. He has numerous peer reviewed publications, has contributed to several chapters in various texts and coedited the May 2008 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America on Orofacial Pain and Dysfunction. In addition, he serves as a reviewer for a number of peer-reviewed journals. Ramesh has an appointment as a Clinical Associate Professor at the School of Dentistry of the University of Western Australia and is actively involved in teaching and research. He is the secretary of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia and co-chair of the Dental and Orofacial Special Interest Group of the Australasian Sleep Association. He also has public appointments at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Oral Health Centre of Western Australia and Princess Margaret Hospital for Children. Dr Stephen Knott Specialist Forensic Odontologist Stephen has been a practicing dentist for the past 45 years with the majority of the time being in private practice. He has also been a Clinical Tutor at the University of Western Australia for over 25 years. He qualified as a Forensic Odontologist in 1991 and is currently registered as a Specialist Forensic Odontologist. Stephen has been the sole Consultant Forensic Odontologist for Western Australia for the past 25 years and established post graduate training in Forensic Odontology at OHCWA in 2007.
