BLOOD INFORMATION SHEET Blood contains cells, proteins, and sugars If a test tube of blood is left to stand for half an hour, the blood separates into three layers as the denser components sink to the bottom of the tube and fluid remains at the top. The straw-colored fluid that forms the top layer is called plasma and forms about 60% of blood. The middle white layer is composed of white blood cells (WBCs) and platelets, and the bottom red layer is the red blood cells (RBCs). These bottom two layers of cells form about 40% of the blood. Plasma is mainly water, but it also contains many important substances such as proteins (albumin, clotting factors, antibodies, enzymes, and hormones), sugars (glucose), and fat particles. All of the cells found in the blood come from bone marrow. They begin their life as stem cells, and they mature into three main types of cells Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, and platelets. Red blood cells transport oxygen Every second, 2-3 million RBCs are produced in the bone marrow and released into the circulation. RBCs are the most common type of cell found in the blood, with each cubic millimeter of blood containing 4-6 million cells. With a diameter of only 6 µm, RBCs are small enough to squeeze through the smallest blood vessels. They circulate around the body for up to 120 days, at which point the old or damaged RBCs are removed from the circulation by specialized cells (macrophages) in the spleen and liver. In humans, as in all mammals, the mature RBC lacks a nucleus. This allows the cell more room to store hemoglobin, the oxygen-binding protein, enabling the RBC to transport more oxygen. RBCs are also biconcave in shape; this shape increases their surface area for the diffusion of oxygen across their surfaces. In non-mammalian vertebrates such as birds and fish, mature RBCs do have a nucleus.

White blood cells are part of the immune response WBCs come in many different shapes and sizes. Despite their differences in appearance, all of the various types of WBCs have a role in the immune response. They circulate in the blood until they receive a signal that a part of the body is damaged. In response to these signals, the WBCs leave the blood vessel by squeezing through holes in the blood vessel wall. They migrate to the source of the signal and help begin the healing process. Individuals who have low levels of WBCs may have more and worse infections. Depending upon which WBCs are missing, the patient is at risk for different types of infection. Platelets help blood to clot Platelets are irregularly shaped fragments of cells that circulate in the blood until they are either activated to form a blood clot or are removed by the spleen. As with all the cells in the blood, platelets originate from stem cells in the bone marrow. The stem cells develop into platelet precursors (called megakaryocytes) that "shed" platelets into the bloodstream. There, platelets circulate for about 9 days. If they encounter damaged blood vessel walls during this time, they stick to the damaged area and are activated to form a blood clot. This plugs the hole. Otherwise, at the end of their life span they are removed from the circulation by the spleen. In a diverse number of diseases where the spleen is overactive, e.g. rheumatoid arthritis and leukemia, the spleen removes too many platelets, leading to increased bleeding.

SKELETAL MUSCLE INFORMATION SHEET A whole skeletal muscle is considered an organ of the muscular system. Each organ or muscle consists of skeletal muscle tissue, connective tissue, nerve tissue, and blood or vascular tissue. Skeletal muscles vary considerably in size, shape, and arrangement of fibers. They range from extremely tiny strands such as the stapedium muscle of the middle ear to large masses such as the muscles of the thigh. Some skeletal muscles are broad in shape and some narrow. Structure: Skeletal muscle is called "striated" because of its appearance consisting of light and dark bands visible using a light microscope. The human body is made up of trillions of cells. Cells of the nervous system, called nerve cells or neurons, are specialized to carry "messages" through an electrochemical process. NERVE CELL INFORMATION SHEET Neurons come in many different shapes and sizes. Some of the smallest neurons have cell bodies that are only 4 microns wide. Some of the biggest neurons have cell bodies that are 100 microns wide. (Remember that 1 micron is equal to one thousandth of a millimeter!). Neurons carry out basic cellular processes such as protein synthesis and energy production. However, neurons differ from other cells in the body because: Neurons have specialized cell parts called dendrites and axons. Dendrites bring electrical signals to the cell body and axons take information away from the cell body. SPERM CELL INFORMATION SHEET Function of the Sperm Cell A sperm cell is the male reproductive cell that carries the male portion of chromosomes, DNA or hereditary information to be fused with the female egg, or ovum. In humans and many other animal sperm cells, the sperm carries various amounts of hereditary information inside the cell's nucleus. In plants, the sperm cell is much smaller and the sperm nucleus is produced inside pollen. There are also various ways in which sperm can be transmitted to the egg for fertilization. Sperm can be sent to the female egg through internal fertilization (sexual intercourse), or through external fertilization, meaning the sperm is sent to the egg on the wind, or transmitted by another animal such as birds, bees or other insects. Structure of a Sperm Cell The sperm cell is composed of three main parts: the head, midpiece and tail. The head, with a cap, or acrosome, containing enzymes near the tip, contains the nucleus and all hereditary information needed to successfully reproduce once the sperm cell has fertilized an egg. The head is also used to penetrate the egg. The midpiece contains various pieces of mitochondria which are essential for the sperm to successfully survive on its journey to the female egg. The flagellating tail propels the sperm cell, moving as quickly as possible to reach the egg. Components of a Sperm Cell The nucleus, located on the head of the sperm cell, contains all of the necessary components for successful reproduction. In human and animal sperm, the nucleus contains various amounts of DNA and chromosomes that fuse together with similar DNA and chromosomes inside the female egg once the sperm has successfully fertilized the egg. Sperm cells have a limited life span. In humans they can survive up to three days inside the female reproductive system; however many of them die off very quickly, sometimes within a few minutes, or a few hours.
