West Midlands Member Network Autumn 2014 Volume 1, Issue 2 Network News WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR I feel like so much has happened since our last issue! We allocated two Travel Bursaries to attend CILIP s Big Day and AGM. There was a disappointingly low number of applications, even after we extended the deadline, but I hope that our plans to offer these types of bursaries more often will make our members more willing to apply in the future. We ve confirmed the date for our Member s Day on 9th February 2015; save the date now! As part of the day we will be hosting our CILIP Debate session, see page 6 for more details. We also hosted, as part of our series of informal networking events, a Twilight Tour of The Hive in Worcester. A photo spread is on pages 4 and 5. Again, we had a small turnout, but everyone had a great time, and adjourned after the Tour to a local pub which sells superb Pie and Mash! We re planning more of the smaller, informal networking events across the region in the future. If you would like to host something in your area, please let us know at cilipwmmn@gmail.com Lisa INSIDE THIS ISSUE: CILIP Big Day Report 1... 2 CILIP Big Day Report 2... 3 Dates for your Diary... 4 The Hive Photo Spread... 4 Member s Day details... 6 Fun and Games... 6 CONTACT US Email: cilipwmmn@gmail.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/ cilipwestmidlands Twitter: www.twitter.com/cilipwm Flickr: www.flickr.com/cilipwm

CILIP S BIG DAY AND AGM: TRAVEL BURSARY RE- PORTS If you would like to know more about our Committee Members you can view individual profiles of members on our webpages: www.cilip.org.uk/westmidlands-branch/ committee If you would like to get involved in the committee, in any capacity, please get in touch: cilipwmmn@gmail.com 2 FOR MORE INFORMATION: CILIP BIG DAY AND AGM 2014 BY DAN LIVESEY - LIBRARY SUPERVI- SOR, MANCHESTER MENTAL HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE TRUST On 20 th September, I attended the CILIP Big Day and AGM in Bristol and received a 50 travel bursary from the CILIP West Midlands Member Network. This event was a free mini-conference for CILIP members and hosted a variety of inspiring speakers and the CILIP AGM. This was the second CILIP conference I attended in 2014 after the Health Libraries Group conference in July and once again I was not disappointed. The whole day was really enjoyable. From the registration to the close of the day, I was able to chat with fellow professionals in a variety of different roles. I consider these networking opportunities to be really useful and look forward to any chance to learn what CILIP members are up to in other sectors. I certainly took some useful ideas back home. In the lead up to the event I was looking forward to the keynote speaker, William Sieghart. After hearing that he had been commissioned to undertake and independent review of public library provision in England, and having previously worked in public libraries, I imagined that he would have some interesting things to say. William s speech was fascinating and demonstrated that he understood many of the challenges and opportunities facing public library provision in England. The keynote speech was concluded after a lively Q&A and followed by presentations from the nominees for the Libraries Change Lives Award, Leeds Library and Information Service, Hertfordshire Libraries and Northamptonshire Libraries. The winner- Northamptonshire Libraries with their innovative business information service which encouraged self-employment opportunities and business start-ups. While there was lively chatter and debate throughout, there was complete silence during the presentation by Jan Parry- The essential role of information professionals: the Hillsborough story. Jan delivered a wonderful speech on the role of information professionals throughout the investigations into the tragedy. From managing and compiling the many witness statements to supporting the many families during the publication of the independent report, this proved to be the highlight of the conference for many. I would really like to thank the West Midlands Member Network Committee, specifically Lisa [Basini], for helping to support my attendance at the CILIP Big Day. I would encourage anyone to apply for bursaries provided by regional networks. They support your CPD and can provide you with the opportunity to contribute towards debates and discussions with other CILIP members. I have come away from the event with other opportunities to be involved in CILIP and will undoubtedly use this experience in my MCLIP Revalidation in the near future. Jan Parry

CILIP BIG DAY AND AGM 2014: BUILDING SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXCELLANCE. AH- MED ALMUSTAPHA HAMZA - FEDERAL COL- LEGE OF EDUCATION (TECHNICAL) LIBRARY POTISKUM, YOBE STATE, NIGERIA My objectives for attending this conference are to broaden my knowledge of United Kingdom librarianship and to provide me with opportunities of meeting CILIP members and to participate in the formal proceedings of CILIP. List of sessions which were most helpful to me in achieving my objectives: Welcome address by Barbara Band, video shows on Libraries Change Lives award, key note speech by William Sieghart, essentials role of Information professionals, CILIP AGM 2014, celebration of achievement and the Presidential address. The main thing I learned from this conference, started on 19th September 2014 at Wolverhampton where am studying. I prepared to travel by train but later choose the coach from Wolverhampton break at Birmingham and then Bristol coach station where I chartered a taxi to double tree by Hilton's hotel arrived at 9:35 am, then immediately did my registration collected my conference papers and ushered into the conference hall. Getting into the hall, I felt completely out of place because it was my first International conference, I saw a lot of people from different calibre some were standing chatting while some were sitting waiting for the conference to start. William Sieghart and Philip Wark presenting Libraries Change Lives Award winner 2014 Grace Kempster with trophy and certificate I found an empty seat sat down and watched people as they discussed suddenly one of the attendee Grace noticed and confronted me by greeting then pointed dignitaries of the occasion where she suggested I could go and meet them; I met with chief Executive. The President, CILIP Treasurer and other dignitaries present. When the conference starts by ten o'clock, I was relaxed and excited by the welcome address of CILIP President Barbara Band. A series of videos about libraries changes lives was shown. The first speaker or key note speech by William Sieghart was an eye opener when he talked about problems affecting libraries in UK, particularly public libraries where he urged communities to seek government intervention in Public libraries for modern and functional library equipment. RECOMMENDATION Photos from the CILIP Big Day (including those shown) are available from CILIP s Flicker page: https:// www.flickr.com/ photos/cilipmarketing/ sets/721576480016230 81/ CILIP should increase the number of conference sponsorship. Librarians need to regularly update their CILIP subscriptions. Librarians need to update their knowledge through education and conferences. Communities need to show government their library s needs. Libraries need to implement new innovative and Technological facilities. The Room at The Big Day Thank you for the opportunity. 3

TWILIGHT VISIT TO THE HIVE, WORCESTER As part of our series of informal networking events across the West Midlands Region, Committee Member Roger Fairman hosted a tour of The Hive Worcester on the 14th October. DATES FOR YOUR DIARY Here is a selection of photos from the Hive, including the automated book sorting machine, a Roman Grain oven, found during excavations of the site and preserved under the stairwell, the Ar- 6th November 14 Professional Registration Event in Coventry 24th November 14 Committee Meeting in Birmingham 26th November 14 Revalidation Drop In Evening in Birmingham 9th February 15 West Midlands Regional Member Network Member s Day and AGM, including CILIP Debate chive s viewing tables and a selection of photos from around the Library. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of people in the library, despite the later time that we were present - unfortunately I didn t have their permission to take their pictures, so I am unable to demonstrate this! For more details visit: http://www.cilip.org.uk/ west-midlands-branch/ events I really enjoyed the visit and discussing some of the environmentally friendly features (for example here s a natural air circulation system). I also enjoyed the Pie and Mash in the nearby pub after the tour! 4
