THE BENT TWIG A monthly newsletter of the American Bonsai Association of Sacramento July 2018 Tuesday July 24, John Cota with Indoor (Tropical) Bonsai We had a family issue cancellation for our scheduled guest speaker so John has graciously stepped in to give us a first ever Tropical Bonsai discussion and demo. He promises to have at LEAST six fully styled Tropical Bonsai for raffle and will answer whatever questions may arise. He also promises to answer these riddles. What indoor plant is neither from the Middle East or a Fruit? And what tree was in Bonsai kits sold in comic books in the 50 s and 60 s? Not only that but both of these trees will be in the raffle! The Pre-Meeting at 6:00 will cover Summer Care for your Bonsai. Bring in your trees for advice as well. The Formal Tree Display will happen, guest artist will be identified on Tuesday. For Show & Tell, bring in your Tropical Bonsai, Flowers and Fruit.

At our last meeting, Tuesday June 26, ABAS Summer Splash We tried something a little different for our June Meeting. We had a Member 4-Fecta planned which turned into almost a 5-Fecta with Members working on trees while the rest of us snacked on excellent finger foods provided by members, drinks provided by the club and desserts galore. We also had 2 Power of One Raffles for the basic registration at the GSBF Convention in October. Thank you to Renee, John, Timm, Dino and Vince for sharing their expertise with us. Paul Holtzen was our election committee this year and presided over our annual elections for the 2018-19 year. Our new Board is now in place and we wish to thank the outgoing Board Members for their support and service to the club and, of course, our continuing Members that keep the club rolling along.. Outgoing - Barbara Kelly, Alex Boyle and Dino Pappademos Incoming Lex Powell, Marty Baumann, Dodie Newman Here are a few pictures from our Summer Splash:

Club News and Announcements: ABAS Bazaar and Auction Tuesday August 28 Get your trees and related materials ready for our newly formatted Bazaar and Auction at our August Meeting. This will replace our traditional auction in September. We ll have a giant Consignment Table for members to sell anything Bonsai related to other members and the general public. Our usual consignment staff will handle the transactions, sellers will need to fill out sellers sheets, tag the trees with Name, Species and Price. We ll also take up to 2 trees from each seller for a live auction as we have had in past years. Club commission including sales tax will remain at 20%. Setup at 5:30, viewing at 6:00, sales begin at 6:30. Timing of the auction will be announced at the meeting. Seller s forms are available on the ABAS Website. Club Finances and Objectives Our current financial state for the club is good thanks to great participation from our members in fundraising events, raffles and sales. Our Membership is nearly 100which we haven t seen for a long time. We also had a one time generous donation from Chris Hartung of his entire collection. With the additional funds, the Board has elected to enhance the quality of our Monthly Raffles, elevate the quality of our Guest and Member Demo Trees and look to enlist more Non-member Expert Speakers at our meetings. These items were selected with the idea everyone benefits and everyone has a chance to win the raffles. So enjoy the fruits of our good fortune by attending our Monthly Meetings. GSBF Convention October 24-28, 2018 McClellan Conference Center, Sacramento This year John (Prizes) and Sylvia (Staffing) with ABAS is in charge of the Raffle operation for the convention. Please contact Sylvia if you would like to volunteer to help at the sales table. At the Convention there is a Bonsai Display (Show) for all to enjoy. This is not the competitive display. If you have a tree you would like to show, contact Renee with pictures and a brief description. Garden Center Fall Sale October 6&7 Each year the Garden Center hosts a Spring and Fall sale to give our clubs exposure to the public and provide an opportunity to sell items as a fundraiser for their activities. ABAS will have a sales table both days. Please consider donating Bonsai related items for sale or on a consignment basis. More details and contacts to come.
