The NOSHAN Project: Sustainable Production of Functional and Safe Feed from Food Waste Brussels, 10 th November 2015 Dr. Montse Jorba LEITAT Technological Center
Overall objectives Sustainable Production of Functional and Safe Feed from Food Waste with nutritional value, functionality and safety monitored and investigated Strategy: A. Replacement of bulk feed ingredients: to cope with the huge amounts of wastes derived from food B. Valorisation of waste components into feed additives: to cope for animal needs and improve feed price
Main achievements KNOWLEDGE FULL DATABASE OF FOOD WASTE: availability and detailed characterisation. Broad portfolio of food derived waste with compositional and nutritional values EFFICACY VALIDATION on the performance, product quality, health and welfare of piglet and poultry EVALUATION OF THE TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC VIABILITY of NOSHAN processes and products by risk evaluation and technical barrier identification LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA) IMPLEMENTATION on food waste on a large scale system PRODUCTS OLIVE POMACE EXTRACT with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties BIOACTIVE PEPTIDES from rapeseed press cake with antioxidant properties OLIGOPECTINS from sugar beet pulp with prebiotic properties FEED PRODUCTS SUITABLE FOR PIGS AND POULTRY with inclusion of components derived from waste with a guarantee of safety which fulfill animal needs at low cost, energy demand and acceptable production rates for market needs
Main achievements TECHNOLOGIES NOVEL CONDITIONING AND STABILISATION PROCESSES for waste preservation, technical and economically viable and sustainable. EXTRACTION FOR SPECIFIC FEED ADDITIVES from food wastes TAILORED PRODUCTION OF PECTIN DERIVED OLIGOSAACHARIDES by coupling of hydrolysis and separation EXTRACTION AND HYDROLYSIS OF PEPTIDES from rapeseed press cake REFRACTIVE WINDOW DRYING for feed additive production PLANETARY ROLLER EXTRUSION for feed production from food waste PRODUCTION PROCESSES from raw wastes to final products with a quality protocol and definition of critical points
Obstacles and best-practice strategies OBSTACLES SOLUTIONS Delay in the collection and characterization of waste due to the seasonality of some of the wastes and unavailability. Extra waste quantities than initially expected were needed Necessity of adjustments to make the RWD fully operational Damage to the solid content extraction machine due to the presence of soil and stones Contact with different waste providers of different countries. Improve the design of the prototype through reengineering activities. Consider a change in the generation and collection of food waste
Current situation of the results TECHNOLOGY TITLE AREA OF EXPLOITATION/INNOVATION Hydrolysis of protein Improving the biological value of feeds by rich wastes to improve adding the resulting peptides of the digestibility reaction Planetary Roller Extrusion (PRE) Production of bioactive peptides by directed hydrolysis of protein rich wastes Refractance Window Drying Ultrasound and/or assisted protein extraction Tailored production of pectin derived oligosaccharides Extrusion process configured of a central screw with circulating planetary-screws which enables significant changes in product quality Bioactive peptides enriched in functional properties (antioxidant, antimicrobial) by bioinformatic tools Innovative, energy-efficient, self-limiting thin layer drying method, for continuous operation preserving the quality Protein assisted extraction of by-products with enzymes and/or ultrasound that allows the extraction of non-degraded proteins Innovative technology able to produce more tailored pectic oligosaccharides having prebiotic properties, by coupling of hydrolysis and separation TRL EXPLOITATION STRATEGIES 6 Offering the know-how.
