Benefits of regular participation: Physical benefits (improved health and wellbeing, improved physical fitness, longer life expectancy, reduced risk of disease), mental benefits (improved mood and enjoyment, increased self confidence, increased self esteem, mental resilience, motivation, ability to take positive risks), social benefits (crime reduction, drug avoidance, anti-bullying, social contact and acceptance, motivating others to lead an active and healthy lifestyle). Outcome 2: Understand factors that affect participation in sport and physical activity Factors that affect participation: Limited range and suitability of provisions, schedule of provisions, lack of specialist staff resources and equipment, nontargeted media, discrimination, perceived barriers, physical access constraints, physical ability, psychological state, motivation and attitude, peer pressure, financial costs, availability and access to transport, work commitments, location of suitable facilities, programming or timing of activities, gender differences, religious or cultural rules, health and safety fears. Why some individuals are more able to participate: Health status, physical fitness level, financial situation, access (e.g. transport, location), family and social support, greater self confidence. Strategies to improve participation rates: Making reasonable adjustments to provisions, compliance with equality and diversity legislation, develop or adapt facilities, improve resources and transport provision, health and safety improvements, program provision to meet needs, recruit and train specialist staff, use of specialist skills, specific improvements such as timing and programming of activities, increased support for specific populations, increasing variety and range of activities, provision of activity equipment, subsidised rates or memberships, advertising and promoting activities.
