5 Sports nutrition Learning outcomes On completion of this unit you will: 1. Know the concepts of nutrition and digestion 2. Know energy intake and expenditure in sports performance 3. Know the relationship between hydration and sports performance 4. Be able to plan a diet appropriate for a selected sports activity Evidence requirements 1. Knowledge outcomes There must be evidence that you possess all the knowledge and understanding listed in the Knowledge section of this unit. In most cases this can be done by professional discussion and/or oral questioning. Other methods, such as projects, assignments and/or reflective accounts may also be used. 2. Tutor/Assessor guidance You will be guided by your tutor/assessor on how to achieve learning outcomes in this unit. All outcomes must be achieved. 3. External paper There is no external paper requirement for this unit. UV
6 Developing knowledge Achieving knowledge outcomes You will be guided by your tutor and assessor on the evidence that needs to be produced. 11 Unit content This section provides guidance on the recommended knowledge and skills required to enable you to achieve each of the learning outcomes in this unit. Your tutor/assessor will ensure you have the opportunity to cover all of the unit content. Learning outcome 1: Know the concepts of nutrition and digestion Nutrition: Macronutrients carbohydrates, proteins, fat, dietary sources. Micronutrients vitamins, minerals, fibre, dietary sources. Nutritional requirements Eatwell plate, 5-a-day, government healthy eating guidelines. Public health sources National Health Service, Food Standards Agency, British Nutrition Foundation. Nutritional terminology Guidline Daily Amount (GDA), Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), glycemic index. Digestive system: Functions of digestive system ingestion, movement of food, digestion, absorption, excretion. Structure and function mouth, tongue, salivary glands, teeth, oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, pancreas, liver, gall bladder, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, kidneys, digestive juices and enzymes. Learning outcome 2: Know energy intake and expenditure in sports performance Energy intake and expenditure: Energy measures (calories, joules, kilocalories, kilojoules), energy value of macronutrients, components of energy expenditure (Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), physical activity level), energy requirements and expenditure for different sport and exercise activities, estimating daily calorie intake and expenditure. Energy balance: Energy balance equation, positive energy balance and weight gain, neutral energy balance and weight maintenance, negative energy balance and weight loss, importance in relation to sports performance (e.g. meeting energy demands of the activity, weight management, achieving weight classification, optimising performance).
