WHAT RECRUITMENT IS A chance to investigate each sorority A chance to have each sorority meet you A great way to meet new people A process of MUTUAL SELECTION

WHAT RECRUITMENT IS NOT A week to meet men and drink alcohol A week of rest and leisure A week that usually goes as expected A time to be closed-minded about who you want to be friends with

RECRUITMENT REGISTRATION To learn about Fall Recruitment, visit Joining a Sorority at www.auburn.edu/panhellenic. A potential member should complete her own registration. Fees: -$80 until July 16 -$125 July 17-30 -$250 July 31 and later

RECRUITMENT REGISTRATION Submit online registration Submit electronic file of high school transcript with registration Greek Life will communicate with students after registration Greek Life will provide each sorority with application Alumnae may send recommendation Anything sent in directly by the potential member will be discarded

RECRUITMENT PROCESS August 8-14, 2015 Kickoff evening of Friday, August 7 Students stay in their apartments or residence hall. Arrange move-in August 7 or earlier. Schedule, parking plan, and what to wear are on our website and Facebook. Parents should not attend recruitment. Parents only may attend bid day if they choose. Others are not invited.

PI CHIS Are 85 disaffiliated sorority members Have trained since February Have groups of about 12 potential members Will handle any bad news properly

FIRST YEAR OF MEMBERSHIP Is the most demanding Includes new member meetings, chapter meetings, pep rallies, study hours, socials Includes a big sister paired with each new member Can also provide structure as new members adjust Does not include hazing as a part of the new member program

FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS First year costs average $1,900 Each year after that averages $1,700 Estimates include $300 Facility Fee Not including pictures, t-shirts, etc. Some sororities bill all money once a semester and others bill members each month based on activity

HOUSING During Recruitment, a potential member provides her own place to live (residence hall, apartment ) As a first year member, she will live where she has already agreed to live. Each sorority has a section of apartment style units in The Village. All members are expected to live there at least one year. A sorority member should not sign a lease agreement until she is certain she is not required to live on her sorority s hall the following year.

LEGACIES Sororities want to know which potential members are their legacies. No woman has to choose the sorority she is a legacy to. No sorority is required to choose their legacies. The average sorority in 2014 had 91 legacies in recruitment last year, with a high of 195. A relative should not expect a phone call from her sorority.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT LEGACIES? In 2014, 58% of our potential members were legacies

About 30% of them pledged to their legacy group. It s 18% of the overall pool.

RECOMMENDATIONS Like extra credit. You can work on them, but don t have to. Chapters place differing levels of importance on them. Must be sent in by an alumna member of that sorority, not necessarily from Auburn The alumna can write a letter, but should also include her sorority s form, if possible. The potential member should provide the alumna with a picture and resume to forward as well as a stamped, addressed envelope. Send a thank-you note later. If a potential member has not secured a recommendation to a sorority, she should not send out a packet about herself anyway. If a sorority requires a recommendation to pledge someone, they can find her one.

Time and place brings changes to recruitment.

IN-STATE vs. OUT-OF-STATE STUDENTS 2012-2014 Women in sorority recruitment Women receiving bids to sororities

OVERALL STATISTICS 2012-2014 88.87% of potential members who registered for recruitment joined at the end of the week

OVERALL STATISTICS 2012-2014 5.25% were released during the week

OVERALL STATISTICS 2012-2014 *.76% were released on Bid Day Over half of these women chose to leave a group out of their preferences.

OVERALL STATISTICS 2012-2014 * Including no-shows (1.33%), withdrawals make 5.12% of the pool. Most of these are over not receiving a desired invitation.

OVERALL STATISTICS 2012-2014 * 88.87% divided by 17 is 5.23% per sorority

OVERALL STATISTICS 2011-2013 * 88.87% divided by 17 is 5.23% per sorority

How important are academics?

2014 Potential Member Distribution by High School GPA 160 140 120 Students in Range 100 80 60 40 20 0 2 to 2.79 2.8 to 2.89 2.9 3 to to 3.09 2.99 3.1 to 3.19 3.2 to 3.29 3.3 to 3.39 3.4 to 3.49 3.5 to 3.59 3.6 to 3.69 3.7 to 3.79 3.8 to 3.89 3.9 4 to to 4.09 3.99 Total 17 5 24 36 50 68 78 89 121 112 128 134 122 151 88 72 50 25 14 7 17 2 2 4.1 to 4.19 4.2 to 4.29 4.3 to 4.39 4.4 to 4.49 4.5 to 4.59 4.6 to 4.69 4.7 to 4.79 4.8 to 4.89 4.9 to 4.99

But, an outstanding potential member can count on being asked to join every sorority, right?

Don t students with strong academics rise to the top? 30% of our potential members earned a 4.0 GPA or better in high school. 71% Earned other academic honors and awards.

Maybe leadership experience can give you an edge 26% participated in Student Government 60% led elsewhere

Perhaps it s about appearance, poise, and personality 17% were recognized for beauty or elected to courts by their peers 13% served as school or community hostesses

Students who are service-minded must really stand out 52% report philanthropic involvement outside of general clubs that have a service component

If you have a special talent, the sororities are sure to take notice 30% cheered or participated in dance team at school 31% were in drama, choirs, band, or other performing arts 69% were athletes

DON T BE INTIMIDATED Not every potential member meets all of those criteria. The average applicant met 4 of these ten criteria. In fact, women who meet none of those criteria participate in recruitment and happily join each year. A mix of traits exists in each of our members and each of these traits (and more) can be found in each of our sororities. The idea that outstanding women are rare at Auburn and can be found only in one or two sororities is incorrect.

Again, over 88% of the women in recruitment join at the end of the week

Now is the time for a potential member to decide whether she wants to be a member of a particular sorority or a sorority member!

Be sure to follow us on Twitter @aupanhellenic and check us out on Facebook

RULES & REGULATIONS Inappropriate contact can come from alumnae, chapter members, and the mothers of members. The chapter can face sanctions, but so can potential members found willingly participating in inappropriate activities. If someone will bend the rules to attract you, they are probably doing it for others as well. No one can offer any guarantees. There should be no meetings or parties, except those held by official Alumnae Panhellenic Groups.

RULES & REGULATIONS You should not be contacted by strangers about recruitment. Before and during recruitment, a potential member should not receive any cards, letters, flowers, gifts, be entertained by others, or have money spent on her that she would not otherwise receive. From August 5-16 only, there is to be no contact between a potential member and her sorority friends. They will all be busy with recruitment anyway. This summer, a potential member can still maintain the friendships she has with sorority members, as long as she is not being actively recruited by her friend.

AUBURN UNIVERSITY PANHELLENIC Sorority Recruitment is August 8-14 REGISTER ONLINE at www.auburn.edu/panhellenic.
