GAMMA PHI BETA Accreditation Report Intellectual Development Gamma Phi Beta was ranked second among Panhellenic sororities in the fall 2010 semester with a GPA, an increase of.053 from the spring 2010 semester. The GPA placed the chapter above the All Sorority, All Women, All Greek and All Undergraduate averages. Gamma Phi Beta was ranked second among Panhellenic sororities in the spring 2011 semester with a GPA of 3.373, a decrease of.046 from the fall 2010 semester. The GPA puts the chapter above the All Sorority, All Women, All Greek and All Undergraduate averages. The chapter s new member GPA for the spring 2011 semester was 3.262, ranking first out of the eight Panhellenic sororities. Gamma Phi Beta had 34.6% of their chapter members on the Dean s List in the fall 2010 semester. In the spring 2011 semester, 26.7% of the chapter made the Dean s List. Over the past two years, the chapter has consistently been ranked second in GPA. The committee commends them for this. The chapter implemented two levels of probation status as it relates to grade point average requirements. The good standing grade point average has been raised from a 2.4 to a 2.6 for all new members and now initiated members. The committee commends Gamma Phi Beta for their constant evaluation in this area. The chapter took the recommendation made by the committee last year and drafted a more comprehensive academic plan with the assistance of their International Headquarters. The committee would like to see Gamma Phi Beta implement the program during the upcoming academic year. Gamma Phi Beta partnered with the Kappa Sigma Fraternity to hold an etiquette dinner at the fraternity s facility during the fall semester. Professor Sinclair provided information regarding interview techniques and professional dress in the work environment. Undergraduate members also spoke about obtaining internships and their past experiences. Gamma Phi Beta held a faculty appreciation luncheon at the end of February. The chapter continues to utilize their PACE events successfully. The committee commends the chapter for selecting a healthy body image theme for chapter members and for utilizing the Office of Counseling and Psychological Services as a resource. The committee believes that PACE events could be implemented successful to incorporate areas of diversity and inclusion, and recommends the chapter work to identify areas that would be of interest to them. What are the resources available for the chapter to create programming on diversity and inclusion? How does the chapter identify both successful
programming opportunities, as well as how to best implement these opportunities? In the area of Intellectual Development, the committee rated Gamma Phi Beta to be a Gold Chapter. Leadership Development The chapter held two retreats in order to plan for the year. The first event took place in November and consisted of team building and goal setting for the executive board. The new chapter executive board members had an additional retreat in the spring semester to work on transitioning leadership. The committee is pleased that the chapter is working to increase the efficiency of these retreats. The chapter worked closely with the Office of Student Leadership Development in the fall semester to create goal settings and officer transition modules for incoming officers, as Gamma Phi Beta was completely transitioning executive board officers between the fall and spring semester. Gamma Phi Beta held a sisterhood event during a weekend in October at the Heritage Hills Resort in York, Pennsylvania. During one of these days, the chapter scheduled a networking opportunity with chapter alumnae, as these alumnae gave a short presentation on how being involved in Gamma Phi Beta has helped them in their careers. The committee is happy to see that the chapter recognizes the difference between a sisterhood event and a working retreat. The chapter overhauled their new member program after being found responsible for hazing charges during the spring 2011 semester. The committee remains critical of the chapter for putting new members in a difficult position. The committee does commend the chapter for being honest about the specific incident, as well as their struggles to change the hazing culture in the chapter. Understanding that honesty is the key to changing the culture of the chapter, Gamma Phi Beta deserves credit for taking that step. The committee hopes to hear more about the progress of the chapter in this area next year. As a follow-up to the charges, the chapter removed their new member educator from her position. Gamma Phi Beta also held a Peer Values Educator workshop on hazing prevention, as well as facilitating an internal conversation based off Inter/national Headquarters Rock Solid Relationships program module. One of the positive outcomes of the charges brought against Gamma Phi Beta was the emerging relationship between the chapter and their new faculty advisor, Tom Dubreuil. The chapter utilized Dean Dubreuil extensively in the spring semester, and the committee believes that this relationship should become an important piece of moving the chapter forward. The executive board has set aside time during their weekly executive board meetings to allow chapter members to come in to discuss any ideas or concerns they may have. The chapter has remained active in the Panhellenic Council, as well as the GEM Mentors Program.
What plans does Gamma Phi Beta have to use the fall 2011 semester to continue teaching the chapter to move away from negative new member practices? What headquarters and Lehigh resources can they utilize? In the area of Leadership Development, the committee rated Gamma Phi Beta to be a Silver Chapter. Community Development The chapter took a more institutional stance this year in choosing community service and philanthropic opportunities. The chapter looked for programming opportunities based around their core values. The chapter began to rework their standards board this year, based off a committee recommendation. The committee was pleased to hear about the chapter using the board effectively in the spring semester. The committee recommends the chapter utilize the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs in the fall semester to teach the chapter about bystander intervention, so chapter members can become more comfortable utilizing the board proactively, as opposed to reactively. As previously mentioned, the chapter was charged with hazing and co-sponsoring an unregistered social event at the beginning of new member education. The chapter immediately took responsibility and was placed on Disciplinary and Social Probation through the fall 2011 semester. The chapter remained involved with their weekly Reading Rocks program with Donegan Elementary School. The committee appreciates this ongoing partnership. The chapter created Heartthrob Week, which included various fundraising opportunities for Campfire USA. The committee is glad that the chapter continues to look for ways to support their Inter/national philanthropy. Gamma Phi Beta co-hosted a clothing trunk show with Alpha Chi Omega. This event was originally just for Gamma Phi Beta. The committee is happy to see that the chapter is reaching out to other organizations. The chapter continues to support community events such as Strykes 4 Tykes, Adopt- A-Family and various blood drives. The chapter has become involved with Global Friendship, and organization whose aim is to end global poverty. The committee believes the chapter has created intellectual development opportunities to learn more about poverty on a local and global level, and would like to see the chapter look for these educational opportunities. Gamma Phi Beta is one of the sponsors for Fives for Live Week. The committee would like to see this event grow both in terms of impact on campus as well as with co-sponsorship opportunities, especially with non-greek groups. The committee would like to see the chapter report community service hours and dollars raised to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs for publication. The chapter held a Parent s weekend brunch at the chapter facility in October where approximately 120 parents were in attendance. The committee commends Gamma Phi Beta for their parent relations.
The women of Gamma Phi Beta have recently adopted the Women s Lacrosse Team by intentionally attending their games during the year. How does Gamma Phi Beta work to allocate chapter resources to create both community service and educational opportunities to learn about local and global poverty? In the area of Community Development, the committee rated Gamma Phi Beta to be a Bronze Chapter. Organizational Development Gamma Phi Beta did an outstanding job of enacting Accreditation recommendations for the previous year, as well as discussing their reasoning for decisions that were made. Gamma Phi Beta has remained fiscally solvent, even while transitioning a new alumnae financial advisor into their position. The committee would like to see the previously noted changes within the culture of the chapter help to spearhead a strategic planning process for continuing this change over the next few years. The committee recommends the chapter work with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs and Student Leadership Development on this. The committee commends chapter leadership for being proactive in working with Lehigh and their Inter/national headquarters in working through their challenges. New leaders are often afraid to take charge in difficult situations. Gamma Phi Beta was an excellent example of honesty in leadership. This helps an entire organization earn trust. Gamma Phi Beta continues to try to build ritual activities into the culture of the chapter. The committee expects this to continue. The chapter executive board was meeting on a bi-weekly basis to discuss chapter business. The committee recommends that board and their cabinets meet on a weekly basis. The committee would like to see Gamma Phi Beta continue to expand their ways of communication and relations with affiliated members and alumnae that do not live in the chapter facility. The committee is happy to see that the chapter now utilizes a detailed calendar to assist in the planning of events and to ensure that there is a proper balance of programming and variety. The chapter has been much more active with regional and national Gamma Phi beta resources. The committee expects to see this relationship continue to grow. What process can the chapter enact to root changes made in the spring semester into the culture of the chapter?
In the area of Organizational Development, the committee rated Gamma Phi Beta to be a Silver Chapter. Facilities Management The chapter had one major life safety violation, a covered smoke detector. Gamma Phi Beta was noted several times for clothing, use of candles and items left in hallways and common areas. The committee would like to see the chapter implement accountability measures to ensure that these incidents don t escalate. The chapter had smooth closings both semester, but room selection and key processes resulted in keys not being picked up on time during spring room changes. Cleaning seemed to be an issue for the chapter the entire semester, and the committee would like to see the general members adhere to what seemed to be sensible work done by chapter leadership in promoting personal responsibility. The chapter left their storage pod open overnight during move-in. This is an oversight the committee expects will be rectified during this move-in period. How is Gamma Phi Beta going to provide structure in personal accountability in Facilities Management? In the area of Facilities Management, the committee rated Gamma Phi Beta to be a Bronze Chapter. Overall Rating Overall, Gamma Phi Beta has been rated a Silver chapter by the Accreditation Committee. Gamma Phi Beta faced major adversity in the spring semester, but showed honesty and a willingness to change the culture of the chapter. The committee is encouraged that the chapter embraces the need to move to becoming a values based organization. The next step for the chapter is rooting these changes into the culture of the chapter, having a full, strong year under one executive board, and effectively transitioning leadership. The committee believes that this past semester could be a positive step for the chapter, and we will be interested in how they follow through. The Accreditation committee assigns Gamma Phi Beta an overall rating of a Silver Chapter, which is considered a high level of achievement in the Accreditation process, with all the privileges that accompany such a rating. Recommendations The chapter took the recommendation made by the committee last year and drafted a more comprehensive academic plan with the assistance of their International Headquarters. The committee would like to see Gamma Phi Beta implement the program during the upcoming academic year. The chapter began to rework their standards board this year, based off a committee recommendation. The committee was pleased to hear about the chapter using the
board effectively in the spring semester. The committee recommends the chapter utilize the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs in the fall semester to teach the chapter about bystander intervention, so chapter members can become more comfortable utilizing the board proactively, as opposed to reactively. The chapter has become involved with Global Friendship, and organization whose aim is to end global poverty. The committee believes the chapter has created intellectual development opportunities to learn more about poverty on a local and global level, and would like to see the chapter look for these educational opportunities. The committee would like to see the chapter report community service hours and dollars raised to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs for publication. The committee would like to see the previously noted changes within the culture of the chapter help to spearhead a strategic planning process for continuing this change over the next few years. The committee recommends the chapter work with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs and Student Leadership Development on this.
