MESSAGE FROM PROFESSOR & HEAD, DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY MEDICINE The Department of Community Medicine was established with inception of RajaRajeswari Medical College & Hospital, since 2005. It encompasses excellence in training of Undergraduates, Post Graduates, Health Inspector training, Research in various dimensions of Public Health and Preventive, Promotive & Curative services in the Catchment Areas - Field practice areas of RajaRajeswari Medical College & Hospital. The Department has maintained a commendable standard of academic achievement with a consistent pass percentage of above 98% with every batch of undergraduate mbbs students that have taken Community Medicine exams from the very first batch ( 2005 06 ) onwards, & a considerable number of them have attained first class/distinctions in the university exams. The Department is permitted for PG admissions & the intake is 6 pgs per year 7
Scope of Community Medicine involves the study of Health and Disease in the population of defined communities or groups. It is a comprehensive discipline of Medicine, which deals with the health needs of people, both sick & well, inclusive of the problems of individual patients. It encompasses Planning, Administration and Management of Health services. It also includes Primary Health Care, Maternal & Child Health, Control of Communicable Diseases& Non-communicable Diseases, Improvement of Environment, etc. It is a growing field with a number of job opportunities in various areas, like Health Services (Hospitals), Health Education/Behavioral Sciences, Environmental Health, Nutrition, Public Health Practice, NGOs and so on. 8
