Management of Paediatric Patients Module Code: CP10 Speaker: Professor Stephen WEI Hon Yin BDS, MDS Hon. (Adelaide), MS (Illinois), DDS (Iowa), FRACDS, FICD, FACD, FDSRCS (Eng. The dentist should be able to provide appropriate behaviour modification techniques to allay the fear and anxiety of their patients. The ability to administer painless local anesthetic solutions using the proper techniques should be a pre-requisite to all other forms of needed treatment. The dentists should be familiar with the use of various medicaments to allay fear and anxiety using rectal, oral, inhalation and IV routes of administration for the right patient. The dentist must be competent in the use of nitrous oxide including maintaining the proper equipment and the delivery of the appropriate concentrations of oxygen and nitrous oxide. The administration of deep sedation using the Monitored Anesthetic Care (MAC) techniques should be administered only by a qualified anesthesiologist who is competent in managing the patient but also in working harmoniously with the dental team. When deep sedation is used, he and his dental staff must be fully trained in the administration of the IV method including resuscitation and life support procedures. The dentist and his staff must be knowledgeable of the guidelines for sedation for paediatric patients. 6

Two-Day Training on: (1) Fundamental Orthodontics Module Code: CP7 Speakers: Dr LEE Wilson Specialist in Orthodontics BDS (HK), M Orth (HK), M Orth RCS (Edin), AdvDipOrtho (HK), FCDSHK (Orthodontics), FHKAM (Dental Surgery) Dr Teresa NG Chui Shan Specialist in Orthodontics BDS (HK), M Orth (HK), M Orth RCS (Edin), AdvDipOrth (HK), FCDSHK (Orthodontics), FHKAM (Dental Surgery) Dr George WANG Shi Chi Specialist in Orthodontics BDS (HK), MDS (HK), DMD (Tufts), FCDSHK (Orthodontics), FHKAM (Dental Surgery) Dr Wilson Lee obtained his Dental Degree and Master of Orthodontics from the HKU. He is an International Key Opinion Leader of Incognito Lingual Appliance and an invited speaker in international lingual appliance conferences. He is a part-time clinical lecturer in Orthodontics at HKU. Myths and Facts of Invisible Orthodontic Appliances When beautiful face and smile play a significant role in our world today, the number of orthodontic patients in orthodontic practices is ever increasing. Most patients, including adolescents, want to improve the alignment of their teeth and smiles without showing the metal braces, and prefer treatment with invisible or nearly invisible appliances. Despite the wide availability of clear ceramic brackets in the market, patients continue to prefer invisible braces when they have their teeth straightened. Advertising and marketing by orthodontic product companies have driven the patient demands to higher level nowadays. Orthodontists always choose to use the system that can meet patient's demand and deliver clinically excellent treatment results. Dr Lee will critically review the indications and limitations of removable clear aligners and lingual fixed appliances, based on available literatures and clinical expertise. Dr Teresa Ng is a specialist in orthodontics in private practice. She obtained her BDS in 1999 and Master of Orthodontics in 2005 from the University of Hong Kong. She was conferred Specialist in Orthodontics in 2008. Dr. Ng has been a part-time clinical lecturer in both undergraduate and postgraduate programme in Faculty of Dentistry, the University of Hong Kong since 2005. Hypodontia and Orthodontics Hypodontia is a common dental anomaly problem. The necessity for treatment, options of treatment and timing for treatment will be discussed. Dr George Wang graduated from the dental program in the University of Hong Kong in 1985. After spending six years in private general practice, he pursued his postgraduate Orthodontic training in HKU and was awarded MDS in 1994. He was conferred as Specialist in Orthodontics in 1999 and has started his private Orthodontic practice for 20 years. Complications of Orthodontic Treatment There are known knowns in life. And there are unknown unknowns as well. It is important to be mindful of known unknowns before commencing any kind of treatment to avoid harm to patients. Complications are known unknowns we face in any kind of intervention of natural order and that includes treatment. Examples of it in clinical orthodontic treatment will be showcased and discussed in this presentation. 7

Two-Day Training on: (1) Fundamental Orthodontics Module Code: CP7 Speakers: Dr George WONG Wai Kwong Specialist in Orthodontics BDS (HK), MDS (HK), MRCD (C), FCDSHK (Orthodontics), FHKAM (Dental Surgery) Dr Charlene WU Chun Lam Specialist in Orthodontics BDS (HK), MOrth (HK), MOrthRCS (Edin), AdvDipOrth (HK), FCDSHK (Orthodontics), FHKAM (Dental Surgery) Dr YANG Yanqi Clinical Assistant Professor, Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China BDS (Beijing Med), MOrthRCS (Edin), PhD (PKU), FDSRCS (Edin) Dr George Wong attended the University of Hong Kong where he received his dental degree and postgraduate training in Orthodontics. After various employed dental positions in Hong Kong and Canada, he started his own practice in 1995 and has a keen interest in providing interdisciplinary services to orthodontic patients. He is a specialist in Orthodontics and does part-time teaching at the Dental Faculty of HKU. Roles of Orthodontics in Multi-Disciplinary Dental Treatment Most dentists would agree that if orthodontic treatment is properly utilized, it can be the most rewarding treatment to their patients. This short presentation will highlight some of the benefits of orthodontic treatment that you can bring to your patients, from achieving an aesthetic restoration to simplifying a complex oral rehabilitation situation. From helping to change a seldom smile patient to one always smile with confidence. That certainly would be the line of thought contemporary dental practitioners could take in their practices. Dr Charlene Wu obtained her BDS and Master of Orthodontics from The University of Hong Kong in 1999 and 2005 respectively. She finished her higher training in the Department of Health HKSAR in 2008 and has been a registered Specialist in Orthodontics since then. She is a part-time clinical lecturer in the postgraduate orthodontic program in The University of Hong Kong and currently working in private practice. Uprighting of Impacted Mandibular Third Molars with Conventional Orthodontics Third molar are having the highest impaction rate and are always considered redundant. This presentation would show the possibility of uprighting impacted mandibular third molar to replace the poor prognostic mandibular first or second molars with conventional orthodontic mechanics as to eliminate the needs for prosthetic replacement and to restore the oral function. Dr Yang Yanqi is the Undergraduate Programme Director and Interim Postgraduate Programme Director in Orthodontics in Faculty of Dentistry, the University of Hong Kong, and a trainer of Specialty Board in Orthodontics of the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong. She is the reviewer of internationally refereed journals such as International Journal of Dentistry, Journal of Investigative and Clinical Dentistry, The Angle Orthodontist, Scientific Research and Essays, European Journal of Orthodontics, Oral Health and Preventive Dentistry, etc. Impacted Maxillary Canines Permanent maxillary canines are the second most frequently impacted teeth after the third molar. Besides its own problems of eruption, an impacted canine can also affect the neighboring teeth such as root resorption of lateral incisors. Early detection of any abnormalities in tooth development and eruption is essential to give the opportunity for interceptive action to be taken. It is important to do the diagnosis and prognosis evaluation for the unerupted canine, the adjacent teeth, the retained deciduous teeth and also the associated malocclusion. In this presentation, we will discuss the early detection and the diagnosis of impacted maxillary canines in children and appropriate care in early phase. 8
