Descriptive Summary Title: Steven Horvath Papers Identifier/Call Number: MSS 449 Contributing Institution: Mandeville Special Collections Library 9500 Gilman Drive La Jolla, California, 92093-0175 Language of Material: English Physical Description: 2.4 Linear feet(6 archives boxes) Date (inclusive): 1938-1992 Abstract: Papers of Steven Michael Horvath, professor of physiology, researcher and director (1962-1984) of the Institute of Environmental Stress at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Horvath studied the physiological effects of the environment, particularly air pollutants, altitude, and heat. The bulk of the material documents Horvath's career after 1961, when he joined the faculty of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and took part in establishing the Institute of Environmental Stress. Materials documenting the Institute include correspondence, drafts and reprints of research reports, minutes of meetings, and annual reports. Also included are writings by Horvath, materials related to the Center for Aging Research at UCSB and typescript writings of others. Creator: Horvath, Steven M. Scope and Content of Collection The Steven M. Horvath Papers (1938-1992) contain reprints and typescripts of his research papers and articles on his studies into the effects of environment on health, miscellaneous UCSB minutes and committee reports, Center for Aging Research materials and typescript writings of others. Materials documenting the Institute of Environmental Stress include director's correspondence (1962-1984), administrative files, annual reports, contracts and grants, photographs, and symposium files. The papers are arranged in six series: 1) BIOGRAPHICAL MATERIALS, 2) WRITINGS BY HORVATH, 3) CENTER FOR AGING RESEARCH, 4) INSTITUTE OF ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS, 5) UCSB MISCELLANEOUS, and 6) WRITINGS OF OTHERS. SERIES 1: BIOGRAPHICAL MATERIALS The BIOGRAPHICAL MATERIALS series is arranged alphabetically and contains awards and certificates of appreciation given to Horvath in the course of his career, personal correspondence, a curriculum vita dated 1962, and photographs of Horvath alone and with others, as well as images of a research laboratory at the University of Iowa in the 1950s. SERIES 2: WRITINGS BY HORVATH The WRITINGS series begins with a chronological list of Horvath's publications from 1938 to 1962. Included in the series are typescript drafts, photocopies of published articles, and reprints. Writings are arranged alphabetically by title, reflecting Horvath's research interests in the physiological effects of a variety of substances and situations: air pollutants, particularly carbon monoxide; high altitude; desert heat; and aging. The series contains only a few of his papers, and is not a complete representation of his work. SERIES 3: CENTER FOR AGING RESEARCH The CENTER FOR AGING RESEARCH SERIES is arranged alphabetically by subjects related to establishing this center at UCSB and includes drafts and the final proposal, a descriptive brochure, sources of funding, correspondence, and miscellaneous material on aging. SERIES 4: INSTITUTE OF ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS This series is arranged in four subseries: A) Administrative Files, B) Annual Reports, C) Contracts and Grants, and D) Humans Under Stress Symposium. A) The Administrative Files subseries contains drafts and a final copy of the plan to establish the Institute, curricula vitae for members of the staff, and the director's correspondence (1962-1984). B) The Annual Reports subseries contains eleven years of accounts of Institute activities, a five-year review and material for a history of the Institute. C) The Contracts and Grants subseries contains abstracts, interim and final reports on work done under contract to the California Air Resources Board, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. D) The symposium, Humans Under Stress: Will They Survive, honored Steven Horvath on his 80th birthday in 1991. The subseries contains material related to planning and organizing of the Symposium, letters of invitation, abstracts of papers MSS 449 2

presented, and photographs of Deborah Dreschler-Parks, the Symposium's organizer, and Steven Horvath. SERIES 5: UCSB MISCELLANEOUS The bulk of the UCSB MISCELLANEOUS series consists of correspondence related to funding sources, university relations and proposals for a research center and a visual science program. SERIES 6: WRITINGS OF OTHERS The WRITINGS OF OTHERS series contains typescript copies of papers on topics in physiology and an English translation by D.B. Dill's son of a 1979 article in a Chilean newspaper describing an expedition to a mountain in the Andes (Aucanquilcha) that Dill's father had studied during the International High Altitude Expedition to Chile in 1935. Biography Steven Michael Horvath was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on September 15, 1911. In 1930 he enrolled at Oberlin College to study chemistry and after one year transferred to Miami (Ohio) University where he earned a B.A. degree in chemistry and physical education in 1934 and an M.S. in physiology in 1935. After two years at Ohio State University (1935-1937), he went to Harvard University, earning a Ph.D. in physiology and biology in 1942. As a student Horvath held research and teaching assistantships at the Woods Hole Biology Laboratory and Miami (Ohio) University. At Harvard he worked in the Fatigue Laboratory under the direction of David Bruce Dill, whose daughter, Elizabeth, Horvath married in 1940. In the 1940s and 1950s, Horvath held a variety of medical research and teaching positions: director of physiological research at the Massachusetts State Hospital for the Insane (1939-1942); on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania and the State University of Iowa (1949-1958); and, head of the Department of Physiology at Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia (1958-1961). He was a visiting professor at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1958-1959 and at Jefferson Medical College in 1959-1961. In 1961 Horvath joined the faculty of the Department of Physical and Health Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he helped establish the Institute of Environmental Stress and served as its director (1962-1984). Horvath also worked on the proposal to establish the Center for Aging Research at UCSB. Publication Rights Publication rights are held by the creator of the collection.
