You may have heard of CrossFit. You may have even wondered about it. What's it like? What exactly is CrossFit? Does it work? And more importantly, can it help me lose weight? First, let me tell you a little bit about CrossFit. CrossFit is a fitness program. Plain and simple. CrossFit is a fitness program based on a simple idea: true fitness means being good at many things. True fitness requires you to move heavy objects. And run. And pick your body up off the ground. It requires you to be able to touch your toes and throw a ball. True fitness means being good all around. From CrossFit.com: CrossFit contends that a person is as fit as they are proficient in each of ten general physical skills: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination, and accuracy. CrossFit's aim is to improve all ten general physical skills in balance with each other. Excellence in all physical skills. None above the rest. The CrossFit methodology is balanced in it's approach to training. It combines strength training, endurance training, interval training, and basic gymnastic training into one comprehensive program. CrossFit is extremely different from a commercial gym. You won't find elliptical machines, weight machines, or Zumba classes.
What does all of this have to do with Weight Loss? Weight loss is a product of fitness. Changes in body composition happen as a result of improvements in fitness. Improvements in endurance, speed, strength, and flexibility bring improvements in physical appearance through increased lean muscle tone and decreased body fat. The Truth About Exercise for Weight Loss Weight loss is simple. Relatively speaking. It is not complicated to lose weight. But it does take effort. And that's where most people fail. Weight loss is a basic concept. It occurs when you consume fewer calories than you expend. You eat less than you use. Simple. Want to lose weight? Try it! Decide that you're going to eat fewer calories or use more energy. Measure your progress over time and track your results. That's it! But a weight loss strategy is much more involved than that. A weight loss strategy involves an effective exercise program. It also involves an understanding of your daily caloric intake and expenditure. It takes into account the types of food that you eat. And the nutritional content of those foods. It takes into account your current and former activity level and how many hours a day you spend sitting (did you know that sitting 10 hours a day can cancel out nearly 90% of the positive effects of a 60 minute workout?) And most importantly a good weight loss strategy takes into account your goals and motivations for weight loss. There is no magic pill for weight loss. There is no such thing as the perfect exercise. Or the perfect diet. Or the perfect routine. And anyone who tells you otherwise is lying. Weight loss is 10% knowledge and 90% effort
What is a CrossFit Class Like? When you visit your First Class you will be given a quick overview and then a basic body weight movement workout. A regular CrossFit class lasts anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. Everybody starts at the same time. There are coaches walking around helping out and keeping track of everybody. Students get involved and help to encourage each other. It's a big part of what makes CrossFit different from commercial gyms. There are 4 Distinct Sections to every CrossFit Class: 1. Warm-up 2. Skill or Strength Work 3. WOD (Workout of the Day) 4. Cool down and Stretching
If you decide to participate in regular CrossFit workouts you will learn the nine foundational movements of CrossFit (dead lift, sumo deadlift high pull, clean, squat, front squat, overhead squat, press, push press, jerk). In a Commercial gym you have no clue if you are doing an exercise right or not. Even if you think you have perfect form on your squats, deadlifts and/or overhead presses, it s amazing what can be fixed when you have a trained set of eyes watching you do them and this is what CrossFit offers. The idea behind CrossFit is to achieve well rounded health and fitness. CrossFit 704 offers a Free Class so you can try it out for yourself.
