This big summer fun-filled event will be Saturday August 29, 2015 - Rain r Shine -- and this year, mre than ever, we need yur supprt. With emphasis in hnr f ur 41st year, and in recgnitin f ver 41 years in the cmmunity prviding services t ur cnstituents, ur participant/team gal is t raise $100,000 and ur spnsrship gal is t raise twice that amunt at $200,000! In gd times r bad, cme rain r shine, thusands f peple in Illinis suffering frm sickle cell disease are depending n SCDAI fr cunseling, advcacy and ther prgrams and supprt services. We cannt let them dwn even when ur resurces are lw and the ecnmy is shaky. That is why we are making a special appeal t yur rganizatin t stand with us and be ur partner fr a grassrts fundraising effrt. MISSION STATEMENT Sickle Cell Disease Assciatin f Illinis (SCDAI) primary missin is t enhance the quality f life fr peple with sickle cell disease and their families. T effectively achieve this gal, SCDAI acts as an advcate fr imprved healthcare and services fr sickle cell patients by educating and infrming the cmmunity thrugh utreach prgrams. CURRENT PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS FREE n-site Cmmunity Hemglbin Screenings at SCDAI in cllabratin with University f Illinis at Chicag (UIC) Crdinates a federal Newbrn Screening Prgram (NBSP) that enhances fllw-up services fr infants wh test psitive fr sickle cell disease, including supprt t and crdinatin amng cmmunity-based agencies. Partnered with a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) t crdinate the Illinis Sickle Cell Actin Netwrk (I-SCAN) t unite patients, medical prviders and prgram administratrs in treatment, care and educatin surrunding Sickle Cell Disease and Carrier State. Cnducts educatinal events pertinent t the NBS prgram, including wrkshps, seminars, cnferences, and in-service training pprtunities, fr medical prviders and their persnnel. Prvides cunseling, referral services, and direct medical emergency grants t patients in need f medicatin, equipment, transprtatin and ther medical necessities. Spnsrs a summer camp fr children ages 7-18 with sickle cell disease Prvides a Christmas party fr children with sickle cell disease ages 0-17 years f age. HISTORY In 1971 the Sickle Cell Disease Assciatin f Illinis (SCDAI) was funded under the name Midwest Assciatin fr Sickle Cell Anemia (MASCA). As a funding member, SCDAI is a part f the Sickle Cell Disease f Assciatin f America (SCDAA), a 57 member cmmunity-based membership rganizatin, in ver 300 cmmunities natinwide and Canada. OVER 41 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE SICKLE CELL COMMUNITY Petitined legislatrs t spnsr a bill t get funding fr sickle cell disease (SCD) cncerns. Organized the first SCD cnference in Chicag. Petitined Gvernr James Thmpsn t prclaim September as Sickle Cell Mnth in Illinis. Launched a payrll deductin and direct cntributins, which has expanded t include the City f Chicag, Ck Cunty, the Bard f Educatin and the United States Gvernment SCDAI is a member f the Cmmunity Health Charities f Illinis, which represents ver 30 ther health agencies.
FACT SHEET Sickle Cell Anemia Sickle Cell Anemia is caused by inheriting tw sickle genes, ne frm each parent. A persn with Sickle Cell Anemia has sickle cells in the bld stream and has the disease. Peple with Sickle Cell Anemia have sickle hemglbin that makes the red bld cells rigid, and causes sme red bld cells t take n a sickle shape. Sme symptms assciated with Sickle Cell Anemia: anemia, infectins, severe pain episdes, strkes, grwth and puberty delay, and acute chest syndrme. Sickle Cell Anemia is a disease that affects peple f all different racial and ethnic backgrunds, including, Africans, Arabians, Israelis, Greeks, Italians, Hispanics and Turks. Sickle Cell Anemia is a life-lng disease that is present at birth. The average life span fr persns with sickle anemia isn t knwn, but it has imprved due t better health care. The majrity f peple with sickle cell anemia live int adulthd but the average lifespan is shrtened. In the United States 1 f 500 Black Americans has Sickle Cell Anemia. Bne marrw transplants are a cure fr Sickle Cell Anemia, but every individual with Sickle Cell Anemia is nt a candidate fr this prcedure. Sickle Cell Trait Sickle Cell Trait ccurs when just ne sickle cell gene is inherited. Over 3.5 millin African-American are carriers f the Sickle Cell Trait. If yu have Sickle Cell Trait: Ø Yu may pass this gene n t yur children Ø It will never turn int Sickle Cell Disease Ø Yu can have a nrmal life withut symptms, if yu avid extremes f lw xygen, dehydratin, pressure changes r extreme exhaustin. If bth parents have Sickle Cell Trait, each time a child is brn there is a 25% chance the child will have Sickle Cell Anemia. Since yu d nt get sick frm having Sickle Cell Trait, yu will nt knw whether yu have it unless yu take a special bld test. All peple f child bearing age shuld be tested t find ut whether they have Sickle Cell Trait.
