Investigating science Welcome to your science homework booklet. This booklet is designed to give you some extra practise on the key areas in Biology Paper 1, the organisation and digestive system section of the GCSE course. All sets should carry out tasks 1-5 giving as full answers as possible. Set 1 should carry out task 6 Each question has been given a GCSE level to show the level you are working at. Don t forget to fill in the last page and ask a parent/carer to sign the box on the front.

TASK 1- Tissues and organs 1. a) Complete the diagram using the words in the box below to show the levels of organisation from the smallest to the largest (level 3-4). Organ Organ system Cell Organism Tissue b) What is the definition of a tissue? Can you name any tissues? (level 4-5).

c) What is the definition of an organ? Can you name any organs? (level 4-5). d) What is the definition of an organ system? Can you name any organ systems? (level 4-5). 2. Match each item on the left with its grouping on the right by drawing lines between them (level 3-4) Kidney Cell Digestive system Tissue Muscle Organ Glandular Organ system

TASK 2 The digestive system Answer the questions below about the human digestive system. 1. What is the role of the human digestive system? (level 4-5). 2. The stomach, large intestine, liver and small intestine are important parts of the human digestive system. Write down the role of each of these parts in the space provided (level 5-6). Stomach Liver Small intestine Large intestine

3. Label the diagram of the human digestive system below. Use the names in the box for the labels (level 3-4). Pancreas Mouth Gullet Liver Small intestine Stomach Appendix Large intestine Anus Salivary glands Gall bladder

4. The small intestine contains structures known as villi. Why does the small intestine contain these? What are they for? (level 5-6).

TASK 3 The chemistry of food 1. Carbohydrates, proteins and lipids (fats) are important parts of a healthy diet. Complete the table below to show what they are needed for and examples of foods that they are found in (level 4-5). Component Carbohydrates Why we need it in our diet Foods they are found in Proteins Lipids 2. Foods can be tested to find out if they contain carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. Describe the method you would use to test for each food component and the change in the reagent used for a positive result (level 4-6). Carbohydrates

Proteins Lipids TASK 4 Enzymes 1. What are enzymes needed for in our body? (level 4).

2. How do enzymes work? In the space below draw an enzyme and its substrate. Then draw or write down how the enzyme and substrate link together hint: lock and key theory (level 4-7). 3. This question is about enzymes involved in digestion. a) Which enzyme is involved in the digestion of carbohydrates? (level 4). What is made when this enzyme breaks down carbohydrates? (level 4).

b) Which enzyme is involved in the digestion of proteins? (level 4). What is made when this enzyme breaks down proteins? (level 4). c) Which enzyme is involved in the digestion of lipids (fats)? (level 4). What is made when this enzyme breaks down lipids? (level 4). TASK 5 Factors affecting enzymes 1. Enzymes in our body are designed to work under certain temperature and ph conditions. a) What temperature are the enzymes designed to work at in the human body? (level 4).

b) The graph below shows how the activity of an enzyme changes with temperature. i) ii) iii) iv) v) vi) vii) viii) ix) x) xi) xii) X i) What is happening at the point labelled X on the diagram? What is this point called? (level 5-6). Y ii) What has happened to the enzyme at the point labelled Y on the diagram? Explain why this has happened (level 5-6).

2. The graph below shows information on two enzymes involved in digestion in the human body. a) What ph does each enzyme work best at? (level 4). Salivary amylase Pepsin b) Why do you think they work best at different ph levels? Hint: think about where you would find them in the body (level 5-6).

TASK 6 Six-mark question (level 5-8). The six-mark question is a long-answer question designed to test your knowledge about a topic and your writing skills. Answer the question below on the space underneath. In this question you will be assessed on using good English, organising information clearly and using specialist terms where appropriate. Describe the passage of a meal containing bread through your digestive system. Include everything that will happen to the bread as it passes through the digestive system. Plan your six-mark answer here.

Write your six-mark answer in the space below.
