These products are available as granules, powders, caplets, and solution. Sodium borohydride solid products are white and odorless. 1 For further details, see Product Description. VenPure borohydride products are reducing agents used in pharmaceutical and industrial applications. For further details, see Product Uses. Worker exposure is possible during the manufacture or use of these chemicals. Consumer contact is unlikely. 1 For further details, see Exposure Potential. These products are corrosive. Eye or skin contact causes severe burns. Eye contact may result in permanent eye injury. Inhalation of product dust can cause severe irritation of the nose, throat, and lungs. 1 For further details, see Health Information. VenPure borohydride products are completely soluble in water. Sodium borohydride released to the environment would react with water in the air or soil resulting in the release of hydrogen gas (H 2 ). For further details, see Environmental Information. VenPureborohydride products are combustible. They are stable under recommended storage and use conditions. Contact with water, oxidizing agents, acids, alcohols and metals such as aluminum, copper, and zinc, can liberate flammable hydrogen gas. 1 For further details, see Physical Hazard Information. Manufacture of Product 2 Production location Dow manufactures VenPure borohydride products at its facilities in the USA. Process VenPure borohydride products are manufactured from the raw materials sodium metal, hydrogen (H 2 ), and boric acid. Product Description 1 Dow manufactures and markets a family of sodium borohydride products under the trade name VenPure borohydrides. VenPure sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ) products are manufactured as powders, granules, capsules and solutions. Sodium borohydride solid products are white and odorless. 1 Product Uses 2,3,4 VenPure borohydride products are reducing agents used in pharmaceutical and industrial applications. VenPure borohydride products are used for the following applications: To reduce aldehydes, ketones, acid chlorides, and anhydrides Acid-ester reductions Dehalogenation reactions Organic synthesis processes Removal of color, odor, and oxidation precursors in organic chemical products Pharmaceuticals production Raw material for borane production a product group which includes reducing agents, drivers of stereoselectivity, and higher organoboranes Manufacture humulone derivatives (hop extracts) Manufacture lithium borohydride (LiBH 4 ) Exposure Potential 1 VenPure borohydride products are used in the production of industrial and consumer products. Based on the uses for these chemicals, individuals could be exposed to: Workplace exposure Exposure can occur in a borohydride manufacturing facility or in the various industrial or manufacturing facilities that use VenPure borohydride products. VenPure borohydrides are produced, distributed, stored, and consumed in closed systems. Those working with these chemicals in manufacturing operations could be exposed during maintenance, sampling, testing or other procedures. Each manufacturing facility should have a thorough training program for employees, appropriate work processes, and safety equipment to limit exposure. See Health Information. Consumer exposure to products containing VenPure borohydride products Dow does not sell borohydrides for direct consumer use, but they are used as a chemical reagent to manufacture consumer products such as pharmaceuticals. VenPure borohydrides are not present in the finished products. See Health Information. Environmental releases VenPure borohydrides are used in carefully-controlled closed systems. Accidental releases to the environment would result in these chemicals reacting with water or moisture in the air resulting in the release of hydrogen gas. Keep spills and cleaning runoff out of municipal sewers and open bodies of water. Contain spills immediately with inert materials (e.g. sand, earth). Transfer liquids and solid diking material to separate suitable containers for recovery or disposal. Trademark of The Dow Chemical Company ( Dow ) or an affiliated company of Dow Revised: July 28, 2014 The Dow Chemical Company Page 2 of 5

Industrial spills or releases are infrequent and are generally contained. If a large spill does occur, the focus is on containing the spill to prevent contamination of soil and surface or ground water. Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Avoid breathing dust and remain upwind. Clean-up personnel must wear respiratory protection and appropriate personal protective equipment. Because contact with water can release flammable hydrogen gas, eliminate all sources of ignition immediately. Only non-sparking tools should be used for clean up. Shovel spilled material to suitable containers equipped with a vent. In case of fire Isolate fire and deny any unnecessary entry into the area. Do not use water to extinguish fire. Contact with water can liberate flammable hydrogen gas. VenPure borohydride products are combustible and burn vigorously with intense heat. Heated material can form flammable or explosive vapors with air. Fight fire with limestone powder, dry sand, or dry sodium carbonate. Do not use carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) extinguishers. Firefighters should wear positive pressure, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with a full-face mask and protective firefighting clothing. Follow emergency procedures carefully. See Environmental, Health and Physical Hazard Information. Health Information 1,5 Eye contact Eye contact with sodium borohydride causes severe burns with possible permanent eye injury, even blindness. Skin contact Skin contact with borohydride causes skin burns. Inhalation Inhalation of product dust or mist during processing can cause severe irritation of the nose, throat, and lungs, along with coughing, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, and wheezing. Inhalation of VenPure solution may also result in delayed lung injury and burns. Ingestion Swallowing these chemicals causes severe digestive tract burns. Environmental Information 1 VenPure borohydride products are nonvolatile (do not evaporate) and have a very low tendency to bind to soil or sediment. VenPure borohydride products are inorganic compounds and do not photodegrade and they are not expected to biodegrade. Borohydrides, the active ingredient in VenPure borohydride products, will not accumulate in the food chain (low bioconcentration potential). These products are completely soluble in water, so most environmental testing is generally not feasible because the main component reacts with water. However, once these products react with water, they form a complex mixture of numerous boro-oxygen species, some of which are considered toxic to fish and aquatic organisms on an acute basis. Physical Hazard Information 1 VenPure borohydride products are combustible and corrosive. They are stable under recommended storage and use conditions. Exposure to moisture or high temperatures will result in the release of flammable hydrogen gas. Avoid contact with water, acids, oxidizing agents, alcohols, and metals such as aluminum, copper, and zinc. Regulatory Information Regulations may exist that govern the manufacture, sale, transportation, use and/or disposal of VenPure borohydride products. These regulations may vary by city, state, country or geographic region. Information may be found by consulting the relevant Safety Data Sheet, Technical Data Sheet, or Contact Us.
