WEIGHT CONTROL PROGRAMS AVAILABLE AT THE WEIGHT CONTROL AND DIABETES RESEARCH CENTER FREE - SEPTEMBER 2011 *If you are interested in finding out more information about the following research studies, please call the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center at (401)793-8940. SNAP Young adults ages 20-35 experience the greatest rate of weight gain, averaging about 2 pounds per year. This weight gain is associated with many weight related co-morbidities. SNAP is a research program designed to teach young adults healthy ways to manage their body weight and prevent weight gain. Participants must be 18-35 years old and normal to slightly overweight. Participants will be followed for 2-4 years. All participants will receive personalized feedback on their blood pressure, percent body fat, cholesterol levels, resting metabolic rate, and a detailed analysis of their dietary intake and physical activity patterns. RxWeight Loss This weight control program is offered via the Internet. Participants attend 3 face-to-face sessions at the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center and receive 12 weekly lessons via the Internet. Participants for this program must be referred by their physician. Sleep and Weight Control Recent studies suggest that sleeping less than 7 hours a night may be linked to greater weight gain and related health problems. This study is examining the effects of changing sleep duration on weight related behaviors and task performance. There are several different studies being conducted on this topic. These studies are open to overweight adults, age 25-55, who sleep 6 to 8 hours per night. Project SLEEP Many parents notice that their children may not be sleeping enough and see changes in their children s daytime behavior when children don t get enough sleep. The Miriam Hospital is conducting a research program for children 8-11 years old to learn more about how changes in sleep affect children s daytime behaviors. Children will be asked to increase and decrease the amount that they sleep for 1 week each. Parents and children will be asked to come in for 3 visits over 3 weeks to assess sleep, measure hormone levels, and assess daytime behaviors. All families will learn how to improve their child s sleep and will also be compensated for their time. 7
