Welcome Kia Ora and welcome to the Education Programme 2018 produced by the Education and Research Unit (ERU) of Arohanui Hospice. Education is a key feature of the Palliative Care Strategic Plan that promotes the support of health care workers in a range of settings including aged residential care, community hospitals, primary and secondary care. The ERU provides a range of education to meet the needs of the participants and has a particular focus on providing fundamental palliative care education across the district, improving the provision of quality palliative care, especially for those people in the last days of life. There are a number of educational opportunities including study days and workshops facilitated by clinical staff and allied health. We value your participation in the education provided by the ERU at Arohanui Hospice and trust that you will find enclosed in this programme valuable educational opportunities to enhance your knowledge and skill in palliative care. HNZ Fundamentals of Palliative Care This is a comprehensive multidisciplinary palliative care education resource comprised of ten learning packages. The flexibility of this resource means that it is able to be effectively utilised in all health care settings including general practice, hospital, community and ARC facilities. The topics covered include: Essence of palliative care Ethical issues in palliative care Pain and symptom management Palliative care for people with chronic illness Palliative care for people with dementia Communication skills Last days of life Loss and grief Caring for ourselves Spiritual care It is strongly recommended that participants complete the Essence of Palliative Care first, as this sets the scene for the remaining sessions. The above 10 packages have been grouped into 3 integrated workshops that will be provided in Palmerston North, Horowhenua (Levin) and Tararua (Dannevirke). These workshops will run throughout 2018, as per the schedule on the following page. Please note that for each of the workshops you may be required to do some prereading. A post learning activity and feedback form will also need to be completed and returned to Arohanui Hospice. Certificates will be provided on completion of the above requirements following each workshop, and after completion of the 3 workshops you will receive a HNZ Fundamentals of Palliative Care badge. HNZ Fundamentals of Palliative Care HNZ Fundamentals of Palliative Care Study Days These study days will be targeted towards registered health professionals. There will be a range of presenters from Specialist Palliative Care who will present topics relating to their areas of speciality. These presenters have a wealth of experience and are keen to share with participants on these study days. This study day will offer an opportunity for registered health professionals to explore aspects of palliative care and build on their knowledge and skills caring for people with a palliative need. Syringe Driver Competency Syringe Driver Full Training The aim of this workshop is to support registered nursing staff who may need to manage a subcutaneous syringe driver in their practice setting. This training will provide competency in both the use of the Niki T34 syringe driver and medication management. Palliative Care Partnership These sessions are run as part of the Palliative Care Partnership (PCP) programme for General Practice Teams, in conjunction with Central PHO. Palliative Care Partnership Full Training Date : Tuesday 8 th, 15 th and 22 nd May 2018 Time: 7:00 9:00 pm Location: Arohanui Hospice, Seminar Room Palliative Care Partnership Update Members of the Palliative Care Partnership are contractually obliged to attend one PCP update session per year. Alternatively, to fulfil your update requirements, you can attend any palliative care education session provided by Arohanui Hospice or a Genesis Breakfast Session (see page 12 for more details). Genesis Breakfast Lecture Series The Genesis Oncology Trust Palliative Care Lecture Series is hosted by hospices throughout New Zealand. The lectures are delivered via teleconference with a power point presentation that the speaker guides the participants through. This education opportunity is designed to suit the needs of a multidisciplinary audience with an interest in Palliative Care. All health colleagues and partners are very welcome to attend. These sessions are free of charge and no registration is required. Understand me when I m dying UNDERSTAND ME WHEN I M DYING STUDY DAY The purpose of this workshop is to raise awareness and understanding of the increasing spiritual and cultural diversity that exists within our community, which will enhance our ability to offer the most appropriate care. Māori, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian representatives will share their perspectives, illuminating how knowledge of their beliefs and traditions can enhance our palliative care approach for people in their communities. This workshop is open to all those working in the health sector. Community Pharmacy Evening This education evening is for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians and will look at the options for symptom management in palliative care from a pharmacy perspective. Facilitated by Denise Hewitt, Palliative Care Pharmacist, Arohanui Hospice. Venue for both sessions : Arohanui Hospice (light refreshments will be provided). There is no costs for this evening. Caregiver s Toolbox These sessions provide free education and information for families, whanau and caregivers when their loved one is referred to Arohanui Hospice. This education provides: A safe and non-threatening environment for families to gather and share experiences Empowerment of family, whanau and carers to have the confidence and knowledge around knowing what to expect when their loved one has a life limiting illness Practical information that assists the family in caring for their loved one at the end of life The Caregiver s Toolbox sessions will be held regularly throughout the year. Sessions will be held in in Palmerston North at Arohanui Hospice and will also be available in Levin at the Arohanui Hospice Horowhenua Centre. Education Venues All Palmerston North courses will be held (unless stated otherwise) at: Arohanui Hospice Seminar Room 1 Heretaunga Street Palmerston North Car parking in the main Arohanui Hospice car park is only available for families and visitors of patients. Tremaine Avenue and Heretaunga Street offer a number of parking spaces. The map shows entry to the Seminar Room. Please use this entrance when attending education sessions, rather than the main reception area of the hospice. Arohanui Hospice is a non-smoking environment.
