(St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, 1890) Dear Parents and Community Members, Parents and Friends It was a real pleasure last week to be part of the first Parents and Friends Meeting for the year. Thank you to Delia Hutchinson who took the minutes and will distribute them to all the parents who have placed their name on the Contact List for Parents and Friends. One of the difficulties is often finding a mutual time for all to meet due to work and family commitments, so we will alternate days to cater for different parents. Through the Parents and Friends Contact List, you will receive the Minutes and be made aware of the discussions and decisions of the group. If you wish to be added to this Contact List please see the office staff. The main role of Parents and Friends is to promote connections within the school community and build a sense of community spirit. A secondary function is to coordinate a number of fundraising projects which will raise funds that can be directed to particular areas of the school e.g. STEM, readers in classes, etc. The first Parents and Friends initiative is to invite you to a Picnic at McInerney Reserve on Sunday the 18 th March from 11:30am for all families to welcome our new Reception children and new and existing Reception parents. An invitation will be sent out shortly. Please save the date. We will be asking families to bring their own picnic basket, picnic rug and/or chairs. A number of fun games with the children will be organised and I am looking forward to this time together. Annual General Meeting I am looking forward to sharing the school achievements of the past year and future plans tonight at our AGM from 7pm to 9pm. Lisa Martin, our Masterplan Architect, will be sharing the feedback from the survey which was conducted at the end of last year. She will also share some initial concepts and we will take the opportunity to continue to gather ideas through a consultation process. Looking forward to seeing you there. God Bless Frank Congedi Principal

Project Compassion 2018 Religious Dimension For a Just Future Caritas Australia's annual Lenten fundraising and awareness-raising appeal is an extraordinary, ongoing demonstration of the faith, love and generosity of the Catholic congregation and caring supporters throughout Australia to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. Project Compassion demonstrates how love for our neighbours can transform lives this year. Each week we are sharing stories from people in Nepal, Cambodia, Jordan, Australia, Mozambique and the Philippines. The stories humble and inspire us, and show how our contributions to Project Compassion help people build better lives for themselves, their families and their communities. Project Compassion First Week of Lent Janaki is a young entrepreneur from Nepal, who has turned her life around. Growing up in a world of poverty and disadvantage, coupled with a forced marriage at the age of twelve, she was in a very vulnerable position. Even more so when her husband died just two years into their marriage. With the help of a Caritas Australia supported program she is now running her own successful sewing business and has become an inspirational community leader. Just Leadership Day Year 6/7 Just Is Crew Last week a group of students from the Year 6/7 leaders, who will be known as the Just Is Crew, took part in a leadership day hosted by Cartias Australia. This day was an awareness raising opportunity and gave us a glimpse of what Caritas does with the generous donations they receive. The day also allowed the students to identify local, national and global issues of justice actively engage in a process that helps students recognise they have the resources, the power and the responsibility to work for change identify what constitutes good leadership and why it's important to be a leader in this domain explore the qualities of leadership through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching resource and empower student leaders to promote Project Compassion, Caritas Australia's annual fundraising and awareness-raising campaign, in their schools. It was a great day and it allowed our students to work collaboratively with Year 6/7 leaders from a number of Catholic schools around Adelaide. The Just Is crew will be initiating a number of awareness raising and fundraising activities across the school during the next couple of weeks, so please open your hearts, support this cause and give generously. The Just Is Crew Angela Scodella, APRIM Congratulations to the family of Brendan Ngov (2/3C) on the birth of his new baby sister, Charlotte, who was born this week. We wish Brendan s family God s blessings on their new arrival. The following students celebrate their birthdays from the 21st to 27th February: Annjith Ajesh, Ellie Barnard, Preet Batra, Alexandra Falcone, Tiah Kortessis, Amelia Mammone, Amirah Nghe, Kevin Ngo and Jason Su.

Reception S celebrated the Lunar New Year by making lanterns. The lanterns and red packets symbolise good luck, prosperity, reunion, happiness, protection, harmony and all that is good. Happy New Year! 2019 and 2020 Reception Enrolments We are currently conducting the second round of interviews for Reception enrolments in 2019. Interviews will be conducted shortly for Reception students commencing in 2020. The families of siblings of current students and new families to Whitefriars will be asked to attend an interview with either Frank Congedi or Susan Hennessy. Acceptance of siblings is only guaranteed when we have received completed Application Forms. If you have a child who has not commenced at Whitefriars and you have not already completed an Application Form, please do so as soon as possible. If you know of anyone in the community who is considering applying for enrolment at Whitefriars, please encourage them to do so very soon.
