125 Tower Drive Burr Ridge IL 60527 630.734.5000 Fax: 630.734.5050 railslibraries.info 20 August 2018 TO: FROM: SUBJECT: RAILS Board of Directors Deirdre Brennan Board Development Topic: Value of Attending RAILS-Area Library Conferences Our board development topic this month is library conferences and why it is valuable for RAILS staff and board members to participate in these conferences as extensively as possible. RAILS considers it extremely important to have a strong presence at all the library conferences in our area because that is where our members are. Since varied levels of staff from all four types of RAILS libraries (academic, public, school, and special) attend these events, we always meet members we have not met before. We also have the opportunity to engage with many more members in one place than we are able to engage with by visiting our libraries on an individual basis. Our presence at library conferences includes: Exhibiting conference exhibit booths offer the perfect opportunity to talk with members about RAILS programs/services, including new offerings they may be unaware of, and to get their feedback on our programs/services. We usually have a captive audience because exhibit hall visitors choose to come to our booth. We constantly strive to find new and different ways to attract members to visit us and the popularity of RAILS exhibit booths continues to grow. Presenting programs RAILS staff present programs at library conferences as possible to share knowledge and to help fulfill our goal to provide continuing education (CE) for our members. These programs often give us the opportunity to educate our members about RAILS programs/services as well. Sponsoring conferences or conference activities it is important for RAILS to support area conferences, not only because they are of great benefit to our members, but also because they help us to achieve our strategic goals. For example, conference programs help us extend CE to more staff at more of our member libraries. These programs also

promote resource sharing by exposing members to CE related to resource sharing topics. Attending conferences also helps our members to network, share ideas and best practices, and to learn from staff in similar positions at other libraries. Attending conference programs and participating in other activities in addition to providing opportunities for RAILS staff development, attending conference programs helps us stay on top of new developments and trends in the library field that we can then share with our members. These programs/activities also provide another opportunity for engaging with staff from our member libraries and helping them to engage with each other. Attending library conferences can be very beneficial to RAILS Board members by: Providing a number of opportunities to network and share ideas with staff and trustees from different RAILS member libraries and from libraries throughout the state of Illinois Offering a wide variety of programs where board members can get a broader perspective about all of the different issues libraries of all types are currently facing, different aspects of library service, and current issues, trends, and emerging technologies affecting libraries Providing exhibit areas where board members can see many of the products libraries are using or can be using in action. Board members also have the opportunity to visit RAILS exhibit booths to learn more about our programs/services, to get to know the RAILS staff, and to engage with RAILS members visiting our booth. Specific information about FY2019 conferences in the RAILS area follows. Conferences are listed in chronological order.
