President's Message Dear Washington State HOSA-Future Health Professionals, As your HOSA chapters kick off for the new school year, I hope you are planning to join us at our annual Fall Leadership Conference on Saturday, November 4, in Burien, WA. The conference theme is Emotional Intelligence, an essential capability for leadership. With interactive activities, fun breakout sessions, and networking opportunities, we hope to help all members grow as leaders, team members, and future health professionals. Whether you re a new or experienced member, with or without leadership experience, we believe this will be a valuable experience you can take back to the rest of your chapter. In the October issue of our newsletter, we wanted to highlight our experience attending HOSA s 11th annual Washington Leadership Academy in Washington, D.C. Our goal is to bring what we learned to you at Fall Leadership Conference. We also wanted to introduce the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the organization HOSA is partnering with for the National Service Project, and a fun challenge called Pop the Stigma that we encourage you to try out in your chapters. We would love to connect with you on social media, so please like and follow our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts (@officialwahosa) and tag us in any HOSA-related posts including Pop the Stigma for a chance to be featured! Also, if you would like to be added to our mailing list or have any questions, feel free to email us at stateofficers@wahosa.org. Hope to see you this November! Sincerely, Vaishnavi Phadnis 2017-18 WA HOSA President 2
Pop the Stigma Around Mental Illness! As many of you may know, HOSA is partnering with the National Alliance on Mental Illness this year for the National Service Project. If your chapter is looking for simple ways to participate, here s an idea from the national executive council! Much like the ALS ice bucket challenge, popping the stigma is a metaphorical and quick challenge that can make a huge impact by spreading awareness when shared on social media! Simply inflate a latex balloon and on it write either a mental illness or a stigma about mental illness with a permanent marker. For example one could write Major depressive disorder, Mental illness is only made up to get attention, or You can t be friends with people who have mental illness. Then have someone record you, and: (1) state a statistic about mental illness, (2) say, HOSA sees the person, not the illness, (3) pop the balloon, and (4) challenge at least one other person to do the Pop the Stigma challenge. By popping the balloon, you are metaphorically popping the stigma. Now all that s left to do is post the video! Either through personal accounts or HOSA accounts, let s help spread the word about popping stigmas about mental illness! Remember to tag @officialwahosa in your posts to be featured! 3
Washington Leadership Academy Update Last month, five of your Washington State officers had the privilege of attending the 11 th annual Washington Leadership Academy in Washington DC. They had an amazing experience and were able to learn valuable leadership skills, network with other state officers from around the country, and become inspired for our Washington Fall Leadership Conference, all to make Washington HOSA even stronger. The 3 days of activities provided many new lessons about leadership and the role of emotional intelligence in being an effective leader, which they have already implemented back at home. At FLC, they hope to teach everyone these valuable skills in order to make Washington HOSA even stronger. The officers from different states provided valuable information about their conferences and organization that will be implemented into Washington HOSA to make our conferences even more successful. Lastly, during WLA your state officers were able to shape the amazing Fall Leadership Conference, which will be the best one yet. 4
