Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves. Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) 1

Is It Possible to Become Happier? Is Happiness Justifiable? To be stupid, selfish, and have good health are three requirements for happiness, though if stupidity is lacking, all is lost. Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) Being happy raises the likelihood of accruing rewards in all the important life domains, such as relationships, work, and health. Our happiness ripples through the social fabric and comes to benefit many other people. 2

What Good Are Positive Emotions? Positive emotions open our hearts and minds. They unlock other-focused thinking. They broaden the scope of our attention, promote open-minded and creative informationprocessing. They facilitate building intellectual, psychological, social, and physical resources over time. Positive emotions trigger upward spirals toward happiness. For Happiness, We Need an Abundance of Positive Emotions Pride Serenity Kindness Enthusiasm Joy Awe Inspiration Interest 5

Happiness Positive Emotions A Healthy Sense of Self are wholesome qualities of the heart and mind. Honesty Courage Compassion Forgiveness Justice are essential to a happy, thriving, worth-of-living life. Possessing and exercising virtue is the only reliable bet for a happy, flourishing life. 6
