HIV/AIDS 5 The HIV/AIDS pandemic is decimating Sub-Saharan Africa In South Africa: 1,000 people die every day due to AIDS 20% of children are expected to lose a parent by 2012 Every year, over 60,000 babies are born with HIV and most die before their 2nd birthday In Mozambique: An estimated 2 million people are HIV+ (160,000 of these are children) Only 29% of HIV+ pregnant women receive treatment to prevent mother to child transmission Only 28% of adults and children with advanced HIV infection are receiving antiretroviral therapy
HIV/AIDS 6 Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Programme The ART Programme prevents children from being prematurely orphaned by keeping their HIV+ mothers and caregivers alive. The Programme: ensures that these mothers as well as children infected with HIV receive life saving drugs, support and care partners with government to enable rapid and large scale delivery through local clinics, and sustainable exit In South Africa ARK had enrolled 32,963 HIV+ carers and children onto treatment at the end of June 2008. In Mozambique ARK aims to enrol 4,500 mothers and carers and 500 children onto treatment over the next four years. Since 2003 ARK has prevented 63,937 children from being orphaned by or dying from AIDS
HIV/AIDS 7 Supporting ART The Clinton-ARK Initiative for Mozambique (CAIM) CAIM is training health workers to support and deliver the ART Programme, tackling the severe shortage of medical technicians (in Mozambique there are just 800 doctors for a population of 20m). Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission (PMTCT) ARK has launched a pilot study to address the key gaps in and improve PMTCT delivery in South Africa. The study aims to demonstrate how it is possible to reduce the transmission rate to less than 5%. PMTCT is concurrently being introduced to ARK s ART programmes in South Africa and Mozambique. Child Services ARK is supporting vulnerable children in AIDS-affected communities of South Africa through its Grant Access Programme that supports families to access the social grants to which they are entitled from the government. ARK had supported over 10,400 grant applications by June 2008. ARK will support 21,000 grant applications by 2010.
Private Foundations 8 90%+ funding is government-driven Private foundations act as catalysts for change don t substitute for the public health service ability to innovate speed and targeting of funding and implementation
Economic Downturn 9 Funding impact Rapid change in climate inevitable drop in funding Is the shortage of ARVs in the Free State a sign of what s to come? Service cuts Hope or Despair? Major challenges in the face of existing shortfall Stretching the ability of governments and NGOs to deliver where needed Pressure for efficiency, accountability and innovation Will resources be targeted where impact is highest?
