CORNING AMERICAN LEGION 8 RIVER ROAD CORNING, NY 14830 (P) 607-654-7735 (F) 607-654-7961 American Legion Commander: Greg Jensen Board President: Tom Marmuscak Auxiliary President: Diane Gridley SAL Commander: Tom Barto Club Coordinator: Brittany Peaslee Newsletter Editor: Brittany Peaslee Tech and Quality Advisor: Steve Schwarz The Newsletter of American Legion Post #746 September 2018 From our Commander: August has flown by with many needed changes made to the Post to support sustainable operations and improve morale. I personally welcome those members who have returned to our Post via word of mouth and networking and have brought other long-lost members back in as well. Volume The suggestion 1, Issue box 3 is being monitored and changes being made as a result including bringing a dart machine in and turning the banquet hall operations back over to the head Chef. Keep the ideas coming, if we can continue to bring members in who want to be here, then the Post can return to being financially healthy to support our main initiatives as a 501.c.19 non-profit Veteran s organization. A hearty thanks to those who have stepped up to volunteer to run events and participate on the Honor Guard; we had two new members join the Ritual Team in August. This is a great way to volunteer and provide community outreach support to perform funeral honors duty for deceased Veterans. It is a humbling and emotionally moving event to be part of the flag fold, rifle team firing three volleys, bugler playing taps, bagpiper playing amazing grace, and the presentation of the flag to the next of kin. This is the greatest support that our Honor Guard team provides to our community, and we are the only Honor Guard in the Southern Tier who has a member of each Armed Service represented (Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, AND Coast Guard) to be able to provide full military honors in the event that the active service does not have a team available. We are still in need of a Legion Rider s Chairman to take the lead in organizing those interested in participating in the Post s newly approved American Legion Riders Chapter 746. What the Chapter chooses to do will be whatever the participants want to do, whether it is parades, funeral honors, charity rides, memorial services, or just put a flag and plaque on their bikes and have them in the parking lot. The slate is blank and ready to be defined by the 10-12 riders who have expressed interest, with any others welcome to join and participate. From the Board: September Meetings BOD:13th 1800 POST:13th 1900 SAL:10th 1800 AUX:12th 1830 Fish Fry Fridays Starting back up August 31st!! May of this year brought in many new faces to the John P. Eaton Post Memorial Club Board of Directors. Including myself, Greg Jensen, Brad Aulin, Nancy Huber, and Keenan Cooper are also new to the Board. There will be some changes to the Corporation as we face new challenges this year. We have already downsized the Club Manager position to a part-time position. Due to this change, Jill McConnell has left the legion to pursue other opportunities. Please join me in wishing Jill the best! The Board is also planning to give quarterly presentations to the General Membership starting in October. Hopefully we will get a great turn-out to inform everyone of the financial state of the business. Thanks for everyone s support as we move forward.

SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT: The Corning and Big Flats Legions have challenged each other to a softball tournament on 9/29 with a rain date of 10/6 at the Big Flats Post. Other area veterans organizations will be invited to form a team as well. If you are interested in playing, please sign up on the sheet in the Post lounge. If you would like to help coordinate the event, please let Commander Greg Jensen know! Marylou Belles There are few people that give unselfishly and with their heart. Marylou possessed these qualities when it came to serving and caring for our veterans. I first met Marylou when I joined the committee to organize the Memorial Day Parade. She immediately welcomed me with a smile and open arms. Over the next 20 years we worked together on several veteran related projects and during that span of time I never saw her waver in her commitment to the men and women who served our country. She always made them feel they had a trusted friend, someone that would give them a shoulder to lean on. When I thought her plate was full, and she was at a point in her life where most would slow down, Marylou joined the Legion Ritual Team to ensure that her veterans received our Nation s highest respect and final reward for their service; Military Burial Honors. Marylou s presence will truly be missed by the Ritual Team, Post, Ladies Auxiliary and SAL. I would ask that we increase the donation from the Ritual Team, in her memory, to $1000 Les Hampton From the Gaming Committee A few things have changed on Gaming these past few months. Good News! On all Pull-tabs, the actual ticket values available are not being covered up anymore! Also, we are still looking for people to help with the machines (especially Legionnaires). Please see Marty Wheaton or myself for more information! Tom Marmuscak From The Sons The SAL would like to announce that the Thursday members raffle is moving to 6 PM starting in September also the Post is providing food for the event each week. The Sons, Auxiliary and the Post are working together to host a Family Fun Day at the Legion open to the public on September 16 from 1 to 3 please spread the word to friends and neighbors. All three groups will have membership sign up tables at the event. Chef Bob has installed the new sound system in the bar area and next will be doing Barrett Hall. This project was funded by the SAL and Bob. As summer winds down the SAL will resume meetings on September 10 at 6PM Please attend your groups meetings!! For God and Country Tom Barto SAL Commander From the Auxiliary Memorial Service for Mary Lou Belles is scheduled for Saturday, September 8th, from 2-4 p.m. Light refreshments available after the service Auxiliary Dinners begin September 11th with a buffet. Serving begins at 4:00 p.m. and cost is $10.00 Family Fun Day is Sunday, September 16th from 11-4 and is open to the public. Next Auxiliary meeting is Wednesday, September 12th, at 6:30 p.m. in Barrett Hall.

100th Anniversary Membership Picnic: Thanks to all who planned, volunteered, participated, and made the 100th Anniversary Picnic a great success! A good time was had by all and it was great to see the improved morale and participation in the day's activities.

The professionalism of those who received the complaints in a positive fashion show the character of the individuals involved to make a difficult situation into a positive outcome for the betterment of the post.
