All are welcome. Please spread the word.
3 MOVIN and MUNCHIN 2011 OVERVIEW Welcome to the NEW and IMPROVED Movin and Munchin Program for Please note that we have made several improvements to the program for 2011 and we encourage you to give the new program a fresh start. This year s program is shorter than last year s program (starting on April 18, 2011 and ending May 13, 2011) and the logs have been revised to be easy to use to encourage involvement. This program is designed for participating students and their families to encourage healthy choices when Movin and Munchin. MOVIN OVERVIEW When Movin a goal of a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity is rewarded with Movin and Munchin miles. The mile reward is increased if more activity is achieved (60 min, 90 min) and if activity is done daily. Doing physical activity with a family member also rewards a student extra points. The Movin part of this program is designed to encourage families to plan family outings that involve being active or exercise. Examples of how to log these miles are outlined below. See examples. Example A: Physical Activity of 30 minutes achieved by student alone on Mon, Wed, Fri (refer to log for definition of Physical Activity.) 30 min Physical Activity MON TUES WED THURS FRI SAT SUN BONUS TOTAL 6 Example B: Physical Activity of 30 minutes achieved by student daily (refer to log for definition of Physical Activity.) 30 min Physical Activity MON TUES WED THURS FRI SAT SUN BONUS TOTAL 28 Example C: Physical Activity of 60 minutes achieved by student with family on Mon, Wed, Fri (refer to log for definition of Physical Activity.) 60 Minutes of Physical Activity If activity Above is Done With Family Member MON TUES WED THURS FRI SAT SUN BONUS TOTAL X
4 MUNCHIN OVERVIEW When Munchin, multiple healthy habits will be rewarded with Munchin miles. Bonus miles can be earned when repeating positive Munchin habits daily throughout the week. See examples below: Example A: Eats breakfast including fruit/veggie/protein Wed/Thurs/Fri/Sun total earned 8 miles Example B: Brings a fruit or vegetable snack to school Mon Fri (Bonus earned) - total earned 20 miles Example C: Does not drink soda or sugar drinks for Day Mon Sunday (Bonus Earned) total earned 28 miles MON TUES WED THURS FRI SAT SUN BONUS TOTAL Eat Breakfast that includes fruit/vegetable & Protein Brings a fruit or vegetable snack to school No Soda or Sugar Drinks for Day n/a n/a X The Munchin healthy habits are designed to encourage the following: Never skipping a meal, especially breakfast. Eating a combination of lean protein plus complex carbohydrates at each meal (thinking of food as FUEL and making healthy FUEL choices such as lean protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains). Staying hydrated with water and replacing sugar drinks with water or milk encourages proper hydration. Encouraging your family to make healthy choices together and spending quality time together during a meal takes your focus off of the TV and places it on family time. Getting kids involved with making healthy choices by encouraging nutritional label reading and measuring out serving sizes accordingly. Encouraging not using food as a reward or punishment is another goal of this program. Food serves the purpose of nourishment or FUEL and should not be used for rewards or punishment. Get creative and use things like playing a game together as a reward. We encourage everyone to have fun with this program and recognize that it is not perfect but has value in assisting families to develop new healthy habits. We hope that this four week program changes the way your family views family time together and hope that in some small way it makes you change your tomorrows into an active and healthy future.
