eloreta Neurofeedback Impact on EMDR Therapy A SINGLE CASE STUDY

Purpose of the Case Study To determine the impact of eloreta neurofeedback on those engaging in EMDR Therapy Regulating factors of neurofeedback would assist in keeping clients in EMDR desensitization therapy for a longer period of time due to greater alleviation of dysregulation of the brain. In our discussion today we will outline: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) Brief outline neurobiological impact of EMDR therapy Discussion of a recent case study combining EMDR therapy and Neurofeedback Suggestions for future research related to EMDR Therapy and Neurofeedback

EMDR Therapy: A Brief Overview EMDR = Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Definition of EMDR according to EMDRIA A unique standardized set of procedures and clinical protocols which incorporate dual attention stimuli The eight-phase, three-pronged process of EMDR facilitates traumatic information to be processing and integrated in a meaningful way for the client in the present timeframe Protocol allows for the integration of previously disintegrated neural networks Information linked together in a meaningful way for the client NOW Changes in neural connection alters how the overall brain functions and behaves Neuroplasticity

Neurobiological Impact of EMDR Therapy Increases left prefrontal cortex activation (Lansing et al., 2005; Levin et al., 1999; Oh & Choi, 2007) Increases orbital frontal activation (Lansing et al., 2005) Decreased occipital activation (Lansing et al., 2005; Pagani et al., 2007) Decreased temporal lobe activation (Oh & Choi, 2007; Pagani et al., 2007) Structural hippocampal growth (Bossini et al., 2007, 2011) Increased thalamic activation (Richardson et al., 2009)

EMDR Findings Using EEG Enhanced left hemispheric function (Pagani et al., 2011) Decreased limbic activation and enhanced cortical activation (Pagani et al., 2012)

Case Study Outline

Future Research Suggestions & Recommendations Recommended that qeeg be performed during ALL EMDR therapy sessions to determine the continual metamorphosis of neurological activity before, during, and after EMDR desensitization therapy Future Research encouraged: Difference between clients that obtained NF in general vs. directly before an EMDR desensitization session Impact of EMDR Therapy and NF in the area of performance enhancement Overall level of impact utilizing BOTH EMDR and NF in treatment of trauma and anxiety disorders Differences between single incident and ongoing trauma on impact of EMDR Therapy and NF
