3 ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT Ministry of Health (MOH); is the organization responsible for blood transfusion services in audi Arabia. Blood Transfusion ervices are Hospital based, fragmented services.
4 Blood Transfusion ervices (Blood Banks) The number of blood banks in audi Arabia is 253 Blood banks. 173 blood banks in the ministry of health. 50 blood banks in private hospitals. 30 blood banks in different governmental sectors which include: universities, armed forces, national guard, security forces and king Faisal specialist hospitals.
5 NATIONAL CREENING POLICE All donated blood is tested for HBsAg, HBcAb, HBsAb, syphilis, anti-hcv, anti-hiv I and II, HIV P24 Ag, malaria and anti-htlv I and II. NAT for HIV, HBV and HCV in all hospitals.

7 THE QUALITY INITIATIVE IN THE MAKKAH REGION The Makkah Region Quality Program was born as a result of the initiative of : The Governor of the western Region Of audia Arabia ( Makkah Region ) The Objective Was To Provide the best Healthcare services In All Disciplines
8 The Makkah Region Quality Program (MRQP) This project is meant to be a complementary effort to that of the Ministry of Health (MOH) The end result desired was to ensure a high level of patient safety and thus the reduction and/or the abolishment of medical mistakes. Therefore the standards were developed and adapted to ensure the program s goal achievement.
9 Outcome Most of Western Region Hospitals have Established transfusion Committee and Transfusion Reaction follow up. All small hospital closed their Donor Area and depend on large hospital for their blood supply. All hospitals start to implement the antibody screening for all patients as a routine method. Formulation of CBAHI.

14 Western Regoin Transfusion Medicine Group (WRTMG) -Established To facilitate communication between hospital blood transfusion services in the area. To standerdize blood transfusion services. To discuss important blood transfusion issues. To promote researches in transfusion medicine. Educational, CME.
15 Outcome Better communication between Hospitals Establishment of Hospital Transfusion Committee Educational courses 1 st was during April 2006 (Phlebotomy Course).
16 audi ociety of Transfusion Medicine (TM): The same idea of MRQP, is to convert WRTMG to TM for the whole KA. Established under audi Commission for Health pecialties Aim is to improve Blood Transfusion ervices in the KA.
17 Objectives of TM 1- Facilitate the exchange of scientific ideas and professional concerns between institutions and bodies within and outside the Kingdom. 2- Contribute to the development of standards of practice and Guidelines in blood transfusion services and to participate in monitoring their performance.
18 Objectives of TM 3- Provide advice and carry out the necessary Researches to raise the level of performance in the area of Transfusion Medicine. 4- Contribute to raising the level of awareness among the public. 5- Encourage the voluntary blood donation.
19 The audi Food and Drug Authority (FDA) Established under the Council of Ministers resolution no (1) dated 07/01/1424 H, as an independent body corporate that directly reports to the Premier. Its objective is to ensure safety of food and drug for man and animal, and safety of biological and chemical substance as well as electronic products. to raise the level of services of blood transfusion in audi Arabia to reach the desired target which is "the availability of safe blood for everyone".
20 Achievements 1- Bone Marrow and Cord blood banking. 2- National policy for NAT (HCV & HIV) to all Blood Donors. 3- National Committee for Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation 4- Hosting of international and regional cientific conferences and training courses in Transfusion Medicine. 5- International Accreditation of major hospitals.
21 FUTURE PLAN 1- Maintain and increase the quantity and safety of blood products through: Volunteer Blood Donor Recruitment. Autologous Donations. Hemapheresis. 2- Expand the scope of blood transfusion services: PRBCs freezing to the rare blood group program. Plasma fractionation. Viral inactivation.
22 FUTURE PLAN 3 - raising the concept of blood safety issues among health care staff, physicians and society 4 - raising awareness of the importance of implementing the quality programs guidelines. 5- Postgraduate tudies in Transfusion Medicine. 6 - Accreditation of all hospitals blood banks.
