FACULTY OF MEDICINE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO Introdução à Medicina I Protocol Proposal 31 st October 2007 Class 18
Human PapillomaVirus: What do University students know?
Protocol Structure I. Introduction: i. What is Human PapillomaVirus about? ii. Which pathologies does it cause? iii. Can the infection be prevented? II. Aims III. Methods IV. References Protocol Proposal
I. Introduction i. What is human papillomavirus about?! HPV stands for Human PapillomaVirus[1]!HPV s are a group of more than 100 viruses[1] [1] Brown DR, Shew ML, Qadadri B, Neptune N, Vargas M, Tu W, Juliar BE, Breen TE, Fortenberry JD. A longitudinal study of genital human papillomavirus infection in a cohort of closely followed adolescent women. J Infect Dis 2005; 191:
!A few types of HPV can persist and cause cervical cancer!hpv infection seems to be the most common sexually transmited infection[1]! Certain types may cause warts, or papillomas, which are benign (noncancerous) tumors[2] [1] Baseman JG, Koutsky LA. The epidemiology of human papillomavirus infections. J Clin Virol 2005; 32 Suppl 1: S16-S24 [2]Ho GY, Bierman R, Beardsley L, Chang CJ, Burk RD. Natural history of cervicovaginal papillomavirus infection in young women. N Engl J Med 1998; 338:
ii. Which pathologies does it cause?! HPVs are now recognized as the major cause of cervical cancer (in [1],[2] [1] Burk RD. Human papillomavirus and the risk of cervical cancer. Hosp Pract (Off Ed) 1999; 34: [2] de Jong A, van Poelgeest MI, van der Hulst JM, Drijfhout JW, Fleuren GJ, Melief CJ, Kenter G, Offringa R, van der Burg SH. Human papillomavirus type 16-positive cervical cancer is associated with impaired CD4+ T-cell immunity against early antigens E2 and E6. Cancer Res 2004; 64:
! Imunitary system can resist to the first infections, but if those presist, physical long or short term effects can appear through multiple forms: [1] [2] Common warts Plantar warts Subungual or periungal warts Flat warts Genital warts Respiratory papillomatosis [1]Franco EL, Villa LL, Sobrinho JP, Prado JM, Rousseau MC, Desy M, Rohan TE. Epidemiology of acquisition and clearance of cervical human papillomavirus infection in women from a high-risk area for cervical cancer. J Infect Dis 1999; 180: [2]Ferlay J, Bray P, Pizani P, Parkin DM. GLOBOCAN 2002: Cancer incidence, mortality and prevalence worldwide. IARC CancerBase No. 5, version 2.0. IARCPress, Lyon, Available at: Accessed September 20, 2005
iii. Can the infection be prevented?! The surest way to eliminate risk for genital HPV infection is to refrain from any genital contact with another individual; [1] [2]! The vaccine has been shown to be safe and effective in preventing infection with HPV types 16 and 18; [3]! As a prophylactic vaccine, it is most effective when administered before the onset of sexual activity. [1] [2] [1]Evander M, Frazer IH, Payne E, Qi YM, Hengst K, McMillan NA. Identification of the alpha integrin as a candidate receptor for papillomavirus. J Virol 1997;71: [2]Franco EL, Villa LL, Sobrinho JP, Prado JM, Rousseau MC, Desy M, Rohan TE. Epidemiology of acquisition and clearance of cervical human papillomavirus infection in women from a high-risk area for cervical cancer. J Infect Dis 1999; 180: [3]Ferlay J, Bray P, Pizani P, Parkin DM. GLOBOCAN 2002: Cancer incidence, mortality and prevalence worldwide. IARC CancerBase No. 5, version 2.0. IARCPress, Lyon, Available at: Accessed September 20, 2005
II. Aims " To evaluate college students knowledge about HPV, using questionnaires " To compare the knowledge of questioned students according to their gender, studies level and studies area [1]Gonçalves MA, Donadi EA. Immune cellular response to HPV: current concepts. Braz J Infect Dis 2004; 8: 1-9. [2]Ho GY, Bierman R, Beardsley L, Chang CJ, Burk RD. Natural history of cervicovaginal papillomavirus infection in young women. N Engl J Med 1998; 338:
WHAT DO THEY KNOW? DO STUDENTS KNOW THE GENERAL CONCEPTS ABOUT HPV? WHAT IS IT? HOW DOES IT SPREAD? HOW TO PREVENT IT? WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? ARE THEY INFORMED ABOUT THE VACCINE?
IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE OF KNOWLEDGE BETWEEN GENDERS? IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE OF KNOWLEDGE AMONG MEDICINE, ENGENEERING AND HUMANISTIC STUDENTS? AND AMONG MEDICINE STUDENTS? SHOULD WE CONSIDER DIFFERENCES OF KNOWLDGE BETWEEN FIRST AND SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS?
III. METHODS - OBTAIN INFORMATION IN SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES - OBTAIN INFORMATION NEAR AN EXPERT - QUESTIONNAIRES
