17 THE TVET KAB STUDY GOAL AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The goal of this study was to assess HIV & AIDS-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of students in the TVET sector in South Africa. The specific objectives of the study were to: assess the level of knowledge about different aspects of HIV/AIDS; examine the attitudes of students and staff at TVET colleges towards HIV/AIDS and stigma related to HIV; assess the sexual behaviours and the scope of risk behaviours related to the possibilities of getting infected with HIV; assess the effectiveness of existing programmes about HIV/AIDS that are currently provided in HEIs.

18 Summary: Negative findings Staff and students who have not heard of AIDS. Negative attitudes towards sharing with PLHIV Negative attitudes towards prevention of STI and towards condom use. Low condom use at last sex, with a regular partner and with a sex worker and inconsistent condom use with non-regular and sex worker partners. Low TB testing levels among students and staff. Very high alcohol use levels Poor use of social media as the main source of HIV/AIDS information.

22 Successes & Highlights of First Things First Total Students Tested for HIV/TB/STI + Wellness screenings from 2011-Till Date till date Total Tested First things First programme accounts for 96% of the total HIV testing, TB, STIs and other general health and wellness intervention in the sector; as compared to 4% of the HIV/TB/STI and other general health and wellness interventions done through Campus health routine Testing Programme First things First has grown from 23 campus activations completed in 2011 to 550 campus activations in 2015 alone all across every district and province within South Africa First Things First programme also provides 25% of first time testers, an opportunity for people to know their status for first time and receive the proper care and support required thereafter First things First programme has shown clearly that incorporating HIV as like any other chronic disease within Wellness component of providing services; help in removing the stigma attached to the disease and result in increased HIV testing among young people. First Things First in return also helps to look after other micro-epidemics growing within the HIV umbrella like the: Non-communicable risk diseases among others. First Things First is one of the few best practices that bring together Different Government departments, Civil Societies, Development Partners and Private Sector Funders in one room under DHET Awarded as best HIV Programme in Africa
