5 'Fondazione G. Pascale' with the co-sponsorship of the Italian League against Cancer as well as in association with 'Associazione Nazionale per la Lotta contro l'aids' (ANLAIDS), 'Fondazione Italiana per la Ricerca sui Cancro' (FIRC), and 'Assessorato alia Sanita, Regione Campania'. The purpose of the workshop was to provide a state-of-the-art overview of some of the most exciting new developments in the pathogenesis, immunology and molecular biology of AIDS and in cancer research, comprising impressive new developments on gene therapy, like engineered vaccines for AIDS. Substantial progress has been made during the last decade in three major research areas: Firstly, rapid advances in recombinant DNA technologies, and in biotechnology as a whole, have made it possible to obtain large amounts of molecularly defined biological molecules, such as DNA, peptide probes, monoclonal antibodies and cytokine growth factors. In this respect, polymerase chain reaction technology has brought a real revolution in biomedical research, so much that K.B. Mullis, who established it, was honored with the 1993 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Secondly, great progress has been made toward better understanding of the molecular nature of the immune responses to cell surface antigens and to exogenous antigens presented in conjunction with major histocompatibility complex molecules. Thirdly, advancement in our understanding was achieved on what triggers the immune cell activity. These insights have led to novel gene therapy approaches that may overcome the frustrating inability of the immune defense system to cope with AIDS and human cancer. Therefore, the book is divided into four major areas dealing with 'HIV Detection, Characterization and Pathogenetic Mechanisms in AIDS'; 'HIV Immunotherapy'; 'HIV and Gene Regulation' and finally, 'Altered Gene Expression in Oncogenesis and Role of Viruses in Human Cancers', presented by international experts and established researchers either as reviews or as reports on latest developments and findings. Representing expert scientific and clinical accomplishments and perspectives on an international level, this book is essential particularly for biomedical researchers and anyone else concerned with remaining updated in the field of AIDS and malignancies. Finally, the editors wish to express their thanks to the ANLAIDS and FIRC for their support and assistance.
