1 Somerset Youth and Community Service STI Transmission Game With thanks to Andrew Wilson and the Public Health team for this session plan Aims: 1. To raise awareness of the risks of unprotected sex 2. To raise awareness of the importance of assertiveness skills and negotiating skills in relationships. 3. To look at the consequences of choices and actions Learning Outcomes: By the end of the session the participants will: be aware of the effects of no sex, safer sex, and unprotected sex on the likelihood of transmission of an STI be aware of how HIV and other STIs are transmitted be aware of the effects of alcohol on decision-making practise negotiating skills Pre-knowledge: young people need a basic knowledge of how someone gets pregnant, how HIV and other STIs are transmitted and the difference between safer and unprotected sex. If you think they are unsure of any of this, please see session plan Sex & STIs and deliver this session first. Group size: 8-30 Venue: 1 large room (depending on group size) Time: 30 min to 1 hour (variable, depending on discussion length) Materials: Teaspoon of corn flour Litre sized jug Iodine drops Skimmed milk (100 ml) Something to play summer tunes on (optional) 1 litre boiling water One beaker per person Labels (printed from list below) one per beaker STIs in England 2017 info graphic TIME WHAT WITH Prior to the session Prepare the starch solution; this represents body fluid infected with an STI. For this exercise the STI will be Chlamydia, but it could also represent other STIs and even pregnancy. To make the starch solution: mix one level teaspoon of corn flour with a little cold water, make up to a litre with boiling water. Stir well. Allow the solution to cool. To check the solution works, test a little in a separate beaker with the iodine drops it should turn dark blue/black. Teaspoon of corn flour, litre sized jug, iodine drops, skimmed milk (100 ml), 1 litre boiling water, one beaker per person, labels (printed from list below) one per beaker
2 TIME WHAT WITH Decide which character(s) will carry an STI. It should be a character that is more sexually active and likely to carry an STI such as Katie or Salman, Paul or Neil. Prepare the beakers of corn flour fluid, one for each character who has an STI. Label each beaker/clear cup with a name of a role. Only fill the beaker with the corn flour solution to about a third full. This fluid represents body fluids that have an STI. Then fill the other labelled beakers with exactly the same amount of cold tap water. Add a few drops of skimmed milk to each one to match the depth of the colour of the starch solution. NB do not use any character names that belong to young people in the group change them for something else if you would like to keep the character in the game. 10 mins Start the session by outlining the aims of the session, and run through the STIs in England 2017 info graphic. Do not give away anything about the content of the beakers. Do tell the young people not to drink it though (it s not poisonous, it just ruins the game). 5 mins Give each participant a beaker of solution with the name / character traits on it. STIs in England 2017 info graphic Prepared beakers The participants should not know that there is an infected role or who that role is. Explain that the beakers represent body fluids such as blood, semen or vaginal fluid. Give participants time to read through their roles and get into character. 5 mins Set the scene with the group The next 10 minutes represent a lovely summer of fun. There are festivals, sleep overs, beach parties, gigs, barbeques and lots of new people to meet. The weather is great and it s time to have fun. If appropriate have a summer type upbeat tune playing. Something to play summer tunes on (optional) Explain that each time they meet someone they have to decide if they, based on their beaker characters, want to have sex with them. Each time they have 3 options: No sex move on to the next encounter Safer sex touch beakers and move on to the next encounter Unprotected sex one person pours half the contents from their beaker to another and the other person does the same back. Then move on to the next encounter 10 mins Give the participants time to walk around and meet the other roles. When the time is up (or people look bored) everyone sits back down with their beaker
3 TIME WHAT WITH 5 mins Explain that one of the beakers of body fluid contained a marker that represents Chlamydia and if they had unprotected sex with anyone they could have picked this up or transmitted this STI. Explain that using iodine you will test to see which roles have an STI. Put a drop of iodine in each beaker in turn. If they have the STI it will go a navy blue colour. 5 mins Ask the participants to see if they can work out who the infected role was. Then tell them who it was. 10 mins Take the participants out of role (saying their own name is good). Let everyone discuss how they felt about their role and the encounters that they had. Ask: Who had direct sexual contact with the infected role? Who did not have direct sexual contact but still got an STI? Who else could potentially have been at risk and started with an infected beaker? Did anyone avoid getting an STI? How? How was the roleplay different from real life? 20 mins Lead onto a discussion about individual risk behaviour and the consequences of an unwanted pregnancy or STI. Highlight that you couldn t tell who had the STI just by looking at the identical beakers, just as you couldn t in real life if there are no symptoms, making it a truly no blame situation. Discuss what influences peoples individual behaviour, choices and attitudes, such as peer pressure and self-esteem. Key points to make: Everyone has a choice about their sexual behaviour. Delaying sex is a realistic option for many Actions have consequences Everyone must decide how far to trust a partner Someone may not know they are infected The Pill and other hormone contraceptives do not protect against STIs Be available afterwards if someone wants to talk to you about anything that may have come up for them.
