1 Emerson School A Caring Community News and Notes Dear Parents, Happy May! Now that the snow is gone, at least for today; birds are tweeting, flowers are blooming, and warmer temperatures are starting to be reality prove that spring has finally arrived and we are ready to begin wrapping up another successful school year. The school is buzzing with exciting events and I hope you have the chance to come in and see first-hand the fabulous celebrations we have planned for your child(ren)! Please be on the lookout for important notices and/or permission slips explaining these opportunities. Spring is also a time for an increased focus on social relationships. I ask that you continue to talk about our school "Eagle Expectations" at home: to be safe, respectful and responsible. We continue to remind students what the behaviors look and sound like at school. Frequent compliments when you see excellent behavior goes a long way to encourage positive behavior choices. Please also remind the children that these behaviors should carry over to the bus ride to and from school. As always, thank you for being so supportive of all of our efforts. Collaboration is certainly key to students success Enrollment: It will soon be time to draft class lists for school year. As we collaboratively consider placements for next year, I would like to suggest that parents who would like to provide feedback relative to specific student needs or changing circumstances draft a letter to my attention. Input related to a particular academic, emotional or social issue will be relayed to next year s teacher. I look forward to hearing from you. Memorial Day Celebrations: Please mark your calendars! Emerson s Memorial Day celebration will take a different format this year. This year s celebration, held on May 30, 2018 (page 2), will honor veterans of members of the Emerson Community. Please be sure to continue to read this issue of News and Notes for further details and information. It has been wonderful watching our children grow and learn this year. Please encourage them to keep that momentum going. There is still much to accomplish between now and then: NHSAS, the new State Assessment program will begin after the Spring Break, the State Science for 5 th Grade, Field Trips, End-of-Year Assessments, etc. will require students to maintain their enthusiasm for learning! Our last day of school for students will be Friday, June 8 a full day for students. As we complete our year together, let s remember the words of Walt Disney; We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we re curious and curiosity keeps leading is down new paths! 3 From the Nurse: Hopefully, spring will suddenly break through the icy winter and the trees will be covered in blossom. But this is a time of discomfort and suffering for those tree pollen allergic hay fever sufferers who will experience itching, sneezing, watering nose and irritatingly painful eyes. HOW WEATHER AFFECTS SEASONAL ALLERGIES: 1 Dry, windy days. Wind blows pollen into the air, causing hay fever. If you have pollen allergies, shut the windows and stay indoors on windy days. 2. Rainy or humid days. Moisture makes mold grow, both indoors and out. Dust mites also thrive in humid air. But if you're allergic to pollen, humid or damp days are good. The moisture weighs down the pollen, keeping it on the ground. 3. Cold air. Many people with allergic asthma find that cold air is a problem, especially when they exercise outside. It can trigger a coughing fit. 4. Heat. Air pollution is worst on hot summer days. Ozone and smog can be a serious trigger for people with allergic asthma. Tips to Keep Seasonal Allergies under Control According to the Mayo Clinic, below are some tips for managing sea- sonal allergies. 1. Reduce your exposure to the things that trigger your allergies. 4 2. On dry, windy days stay indoors. The best time to go outside is after it rains because it removes pollen from the air. 3. Wear a pollen mask if you do outside chores like gardening, mowing the lawn, and watering. 4. When you return indoors from outside chores, make sure to remove your clothes and shower to remove dust and pollen from skin and hair. 5. Keep indoor air clean or use the air conditioning in your car and house instead of having the windows opened. What is hay fever? Hay fever is also known as allergic rhinitis, most commonly used to describe a seasonal allergic reaction to pollen such as ragweed. However, the term is often used to refer to nasal allergies caused by any inhaled allergen. What are hay fever symptoms? Hay fever, or allergic rhinitis, symptoms are similar to the symptoms of a common cold. Some common symptoms include sneezing, congestion, coughing, sinus pressure, itchy watery eyes, and itchy nose, mouth, and throat, and fatigue. It can be difficult to tell the difference between a cold and hay fever. If you have hay fever, your runny nose will likely have a thin, watery discharge, and, despite the name, you will not have a fever. If you have a cold, you may have a thicker or yellowish discharge from your nose, and may have a low-grade fever. Hay fever symptoms can begin immediately after you are exposed to allergens like pollen or animal dander, and will continue as long as your exposure continues. Cold symptoms appear 1 to 3 days after infection/exposure to virus, and most people recover within 7 to 10 days. End of Day Reminders If you are picking your child up as a walker or after 3:10 you must pick them up at the door by the multi-purpose room and sign them out with Mrs. Wharton. This is for the safety of your child. Also, if you are going to be making any changes for the end of the day, this must be done before 2:30 to prevent anyone from being left out and not notified. Sending in a note with your child or ing me at ppoole@mrsd.org before 2:30 will work, as well.
