(Levi Jenkins) If you are going to leave and go outside to play, you should ask your parents so they know where you are. (Jasmine Beauchamp) You can keep the trash picked up throughout your house and make your bed every day and your room organized. (Noah Heusinkveld) FLU SEASON IS HERE SHOULD YOU VACCINATE YOUR CHILD? THE CDC recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months receive a flu vaccine every year. This is the single best way to avoid a miserable, and perhaps dangerous, bout with the flu. For the past several years, many parents have had the option of receiving the vaccine as either a shot or as nasal spray. However, for the , only flu shot is recommended. FluMist is not available this year. Why? Each year, the CDC conducts studies to determine the effectiveness of the previous year s vaccines. For the past few seasons, the nasal spray has shown a poorer level of flu protection than the flu shot. Since its effectiveness is in question, the CDC is not recommending using it this year. Many parents are considering skipping the vaccine this year, since no one likes another shot. However, a flu shot, while not fun, is still a quick and easy way to keep the flu away from your home and family this winter. Counselor s Corner South Elementary celebrated Bully Prevention Week during the last week of October. During our counseling class discussions I shared how bullying via social media is on a rise. Our children have access to the internet through a variety of sources - computers, phones, video games, and tablets. They are often more advanced than us in their technology skills. Please help at home by encouraging safe and fun use of these tools. Here are some suggestions. -Stayed informed/aware -research and talk with other parents about the sites and games your child is on. -Encourage kindness - explain how pictures, videos or statements made electronically can be shared with anyone. -Supervise your child s internet use-make sure they are using kid-appropriate sites. -Explain to children the importance of not sharing personal information through social media and the internet. -Encourage kindness -explain how pictures, videos or statements made electronically can be shared with anyone. -If your children are using social media sites or video games online, make sure their sites are private and they are not chatting or playing with people they don t know. -Talk to your child often and encourage them to come to you if something is making them uncomfortable or if they notice cyber-bullying taking place. -Limit your child s time on electronics. 3 Mrs. Birk s Business Dear Families, Happy month of thanksgiving! We have much to be thankful for at South Elementary. Wonderful families and amazing teachers who are committed to the success of children are a great combination! During the month of November South will be hosting parent involvement activities. These activities are meant to give parents an opportunity to see what learning is like at our school. We know that while students explain what happens at school many parents want to see it for themselves. Please don t worry if you aren t able to make it-we don t want this to be a source of stress for families, rather an opportunity if desired. Please see dates and times below. Kindergarten: 2:20-3:00 PM 1st Grade: November 18 2nd Grade: 3rd Grade: November 18 2:00-3:00 PM 4th Grade: 2:15-3:00 PM 5th Grade: November 21 Thank you to the families who took time to fill out the Safety Survey. We are working to continuously improve our safety procedures at South and the feedback you have given is very helpful. Teams of teachers and administrators have been and will continue analyzing results to implement changes that are needed. Each school year we review our emergency drills at least three times. The emergency drills that we practice are fire, earthquake, tornado, and intruder. We recently participated in a fire drill with the Jackson Fire Department and were able to exit 400+ students and staff in under 2 minutes. With all of our drills, our students and staff are well informed on the procedures to follow in emergency situations. Our teachers and staff members have received training on intruder response. We work with our local authorities on simulated response situations specific to our building as well. Role playing scenarios offer hands on, valuable learning experiences. This is also the reason we keep all of our exterior doors locked and ask for ID verification when you visit our school. We appreciate your continued effort in assisting to keep our children safe. 4 Mrs. Zirges Zone Dear South Families The Jackson R2 Transportation Department is working hard this year to promote positive behaviors on the school bus. Recently, staff members from the Transportation Department presented to all of our students during an assembly about our bus expectations. In addition to this presentation, several times throughout the year we schedule times for a few buses to come to South during the day. At these times, we provide coaching and give students time to practice bus expectations. Like in years past, the bus drivers will watch for good behaviors and will reward students with bus bucks. Students may cash their bus bucks in by selecting items from our bus menu. Some of the rewards students can purchase with their bus bucks are: hat day passes, sit with a friend on the bus, fast pass for the lunch line, bookmarks, pencils, bring a stuffed animals to school, and many more items. Please watch for your children to bring home bus bucks! If you have any questions, please let us know!
