2 3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION Paraquat is a quartenary nitrogen herbicide widely used for broadleaf weed control. Paraquat is highly toxic to mammals by all routes of exposure. A animals, can cause excitability and lung congestion, which in some cases leads to convulsions, incoordination, and death by respiratory failure. Eye contact may cause injury. Contact with irritated skin, or a cut, or repeated contact with intact skin will cause severe irritation and may result in poisoning. FIRST AID MEASURES If poisoning is suspected, do not wait for symptoms to develop. Call a doctor, clinic or hospital immediately. Explain that the victim has been exposed to Paraquat a quartenary nitrogen herbicide, and describe his/her condition. Move victim immediately from the area where Paraquat is present. INGESTION: Call for medical attention urgently. Induce vomiting by inserting finger in throat. Administer fluids and induce further vomiting. Prompt treatment is essential and must be initiated before signs and symptoms of injury appear. INHALATION: Immediately get away from spray mist. Call for medical attention. EYES: Flush eyes immediately with plenty of water during 15 minutes at least, lifting the upper and lower eyelids intermittently. Get medical attention immediately.

3 SKIN: In case of contact with product, wash immediately skin area with plenty of water and soap. Speed in removing material from skin is extreme important. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. Call medical attention. Do not wear contaminated clothing until it has been laundered. Note to physician: Gastric lavage, saline cathartic and symptomatic treatment. Paraquat can be decomposed by alkaline. Paraquat is corrosive to the mouth, throat and stomach may be burned. This must not be allowed to override the efforts of first aides to make the patient vomit. Paraquat is highly toxic to mammals by all routes of exposure. Paraquat is extremely toxic to mammalian lung, were it can cause sores, bleeding, and disease. The lung tissue accumulates paraquat at much higher rates that do the other organs and tissues in the body. However, it can also damage the heart, liver, kidneys, cornea of the eyes, adernal glands, skin, fingernails, and digestive system. Inhalation of paraquat can cause nasal mucous irritation and bleeding of the gastrointestinal tract. 5. FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES Fire Extinguishing Media: Water, Dry chemical, CO 2, Alcohol foam. Hazardous Decomposition Products: Toxic fumes of NO x. Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Wear protective equipment and breathing apparatus. Direct water onto intact containers to keep them cool. Notify the fire-brigade immediately. Ask experts to clean out the area affected by the fire.

4 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS: Keep unnecessary people away. Isolate hazard area and deny entry. Do not smoke. Avoid contact and inhalation of the product. Ventilate closed spaces before entering. PERSONAL PROTECTION: Wear suitable chemical protective clothing, boots, chemical resistant gloves, goggles, PRECAUTIONS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT Avoid dispersion. Paraquat is slightly toxic to fish. In case of accidental spill, prevent the material from getting into lakes, rivers and other bodies of water Isolate discharged material and keep material out of water sources. Prevent product from entering drains. Do not graze or feed clippings from treated areas to livestock. CLEANUP METHODS: Wear protective equipment. Small spillages: Absorb on inert absorbing material such as clay. Shovel up into covered containers for disposal. Large spillages: Should be dammed-off and pumped into containers; soak up reminder with absorbent material and dispose of in accordance with local regulations. 7. HANDLING AND STORAGE HANDLING:

5 GENERAL PRECAUTIONS: Do not smoke, drink or eat during handling. Wash hands using liquid detergent. Wear protective clothing to avoid contact and/or inhalation with the product. Before removing gloves wash them with soap and water. Eliminate all sources of ignition from areas where the material is handles or used. Good personal hygiene procedures must be practiced. SPECIFIC CONDITIONS: Good local exhaust ventilation. Full face protective mask. STORAGE: Place in cool and ventilated areas. Store only in closed, properly-labeled containers, in area designed specifically for pesticides. Keep out of the reach of children and unauthorized persons. Keep away from excessive heat and open flame. Properly keep away from food and drink. Incompatible with alkaline materials. Some alkyl sulfate of alkyl aryl sulfonate wetting agents are incompatible. 8. 8 11. TOXICOLOGICAL DATA Routes of exposures: Contact with skin, eyes and inhalation. Ingestion is easy to prevent and not frequent, if it occurs, it may be dangerous. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION Clays and organic mater rapidly and strongly adsorb Paraquat, resulting in complete deactivation. Paraquat residues disappear rapidly from water by binding onto aquatic weeds and by strong adherence it the bottom mud. It has a half-life in laboratory stream water of 13.1 hours.
