2 Medical Massage Why Medical Massage? Curriculum Outline Hybrid Online and On site Course 12 Online Modules (see below for more information) - approx. 15 hours 2.5 On site Days (see below for more information) - 20 hours Why Do We Offer a Course in Medical Massage? Medical Massage for Small Animals / Exotics Can Help You Improve Your Practice and Enjoyment of Medicine Medical Massage Techniques Are Perfect for: Veterinary integrative practitioners Veterinary acupuncturists Pain medicine clinicians Rehabilitation clinics Veterinary technicians What Will I Learn? The science of massage Swedish massage techniques Myofascial anatomy relevant for canine massage Muscle physiology in health and disease Palpation skills Causes of limited range of motion The science of stretching How to use stretching safely in practice Massage for relaxation This course teaches you how to develop thinking fingers, i.e., become proficient at informed palpation and able to incorporate what your myofascial evaluation tells you with the other diagnostic information you gather in each patient encounter. As you cultivate sensory awareness in not only your hands but also your powers of observation through visual, auditory, and even olfactory channels, you will augment your understanding of what your patients are experiencing (e.g., stress, pain, weakness, neurologic impairments, and the like). This will improve your diagnostic accuracy and acumen and build your ability to benefit your patients in a preventive and less invasive manner, which can improve clinical outcomes. Medical Massage for Small Animals/Exotics Teaches You How to Help Your Patients Heal by Activating Their Own Self-Healing Processes Conventional veterinary medical education focuses mostly on treatment with pharmaceuticals and surgery. This overlooks the large and growing body of literature from many disciplines, including osteopathic medicine, attesting to the effectiveness and safety of scientific, integrative approaches such as massage and other manual therapy methods. The time has come to recognize and routinely implement natural healing techniques grounded in rational, science-based, and modern medical knowledge. This will bolster patients innate restorative capacities by activating selfhealing networks comprising systems throughout the body, integrating neurologic, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, digestive, immunologic, and homeostatic processes. It will also aid in restoring functional mobility for patients with musculoskeletal, neurologic, and post-surgical deficits as well as a wide range of other challenges. Medical Massage Will Deepen Your Awareness of Whole-Body Medicine and the Clinically Significant Role of Scientific, Integrative, and Physical Medical Modalities Our course teaches about the relationship between structure and function, i.e., how a healthy as well as an injured structural support network impacts function and vice versa. The didactic instruction contained within the online curriculum will give you greater appreciation for the roles of myriad tissues in the body that aid in self- healing and ways in which your manual therapy treatments can maximize their capacities. Continuing Education and the Certificate of Completion Our focus is to assist veterinary practitioners / technicians in acquiring science-based knowledge and evidence-informed skills that they can put to use every day. Graduates that successfully complete this program will receive a certificate of completion in medical massage for small animal and (small) exotics. This certificate provides verification of the 35 continuing education hours that you completed in the program. This is not a certification in canine massage therapy, per se, which is what a trade school or other program might offer. Instead, our goal is to encourage the introduction of these techniques into veterinary medical and surgical environments in order to facilitate their patients recovery and improve clinical outcomes. Additional advantages of taking this course include improved diagnostic accuracy with the introduction of myofascial palpation as well as heightened enjoyment of treating animals with techniques they often actually welcome and appear to invite. 12 Online Modules The online curriculum will follow the layout of the required text, Canine Medical Massage. The instruction will explore, in depth, the science, evidence, and practice of massage as well as the value of myofascial palpation and the insights it provides regarding diagnosis and treatment direction. Online materials will include short videos and case vignettes, assigned readings, home practice, and discussions about how massage affects our patients and fits into the bigger picture of integrative medicine. Each module will have a self-assessment quiz at the end through which you will be able to gauge the level at which you grasped the material provided in the course. Adapted from the Table of Contents in the book, Canine Medical Massage, these are the topics that Dr. Robinson will cover in the didactic portion of the course, i.e., the online program. Module 1: Survey of the Field History of Massage in Humans and Non-Human Types of Massage - How Do They Relate to What You Will Be Learning?
