2 Speaker/Instructors: Dr. Ann Auburn: Dr. Ann Auburn completed her residency in Family Practice at E.W. Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan in 1995, going on to complete a second residency in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) at MSU, then staying on faculty for 3 years as an Assistant Professor at the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Auburn currently maintains her Adjunct Clinical Faculty position through MSUCOM, teaching students and residents in her office. Dr. Auburn maintains board certification in both Integrative and Holistic Medicine and OMM. Dr. Auburn has enjoyed two tenures as the President of the Kent County Osteopathic Association as well as an appointment as a Professional Member on the Michigan Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery and served as the Chairman of that board from 2007 to She is owner of Natural Health Improvement Center in Grandville, Michigan. Dr. Scott Benjamin Dr. Scott Benjamin received his undergraduate training from the Michigan Technological University and his physical therapy BScPT from the University of Illinois at Chicago. His finished his graduate work at the University of Maryland (DScPT) and obtained his manual therapy certification from IMPACT with Jim Meadows. He has co-authored the Cram Session in Functional Anatomy; a Handbook for Students and Clinicians. He has authored papers on TDA, lateral epicondylitis, modalities, lumbar multifidus function, prolotherapy, isokinetic testing and aquatic therapy. Scott is the inventor of the Multifidus Muscle Integrator (MMI) and also the Versatile Core Outdoor Trainer. He has taught continuing education courses nationally and internationally with his areas of interests being in biomechanics of the spine, sacroiliac joint, manual therapy and rehabilitation. He has been practicing since Seminar Company: Island Hopper Teaching, LLC. is a group of dedicated Doctors of physical therapy who practice with a variety of orthopedic conditions. They will combine neurological principles

3 to orthopedic conditions and give case studies and scenarios that will help with diagnosis, treatment and follow up for your patients. Island Hoppers Teaching will travel to your location(s) to bring didactic and laboratory courses to you regarding a variety of conditions. Island Hoppers Teaching, LLC is excited to bring their treatments and ideas to you and your staff. Overview: Island Hopper Teaching, LLC is proud to present evidence-based physical therapy competency courses throughout the islands designed to improve patient outcomes. Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants will receive both classroom and laboratory instruction from experienced physical therapists. The course(s) are two days in length and they will take you through the basics for a substantive foundation of anatomy and biomechanics of the cervical spine. The course is a CCU course from the Federation of Physical Therapy and is the second (2) of the trilogy of the cervical spine courses. Course Objectives/Core Competencies: By the end of the course, participants will be able to: Describe the normal anatomy of the cervical spine. Describe muscle energy and how it applies to the cervical spine. Describe the osteokinematics and arthrokinematics of the cervical spine as it relates to specific pathologies. Describe normal kinematics of the thoracic spine. Describe the normal anatomy of the shoulder and elbow Describe common pathologies cervical and thoracic spine Describe common pathologies for elbow Identify pertinent bony landmarks in the cervical, thoracic, shoulder and elbow Describe the relationship between the cervical and thoracic spine Describe the relationship between the cervical spine, shoulder and elbow Complete an effective and efficient clinical evaluation for the cervical, shoulder and elbow Do you treat neurological weaknesses and how can you do that? Describe and treat neurophysiological weakness of the upper quarter Overview:

4 This level TWO course will take the participant through the relationships between the neck, shoulder and elbow. The participants will also learn how to work with patients who have a variety of orthopedic conditions. The essence of the activities for this class will help students think about conditions, what they may do to a patient and how to treat it. This level two course is sectioned off for case study time, laboratory time, question and answer time tables and also treatment approaches. The vestibular spinal system (VSS) and the vestibular ocular system (VOS) will be discussed along with the cranial nerve exam. Island Hoppers, LLC will provide the participants with CCU credits for the participant Island Hoppers, LLC will provide the participant with class material online Island Hopper, LLC will provide the participants with class pre and post exams to ensure CCU credits. Island Hopper, LLC will provide the participants with certificates from the class. Clinical Skills: Participants will refine the following clinical skills under the guidance of experienced physical therapists: Palpation, treatment approaches and how to understand neurophysiological weakness and how to recognize them in the clinic. Know the bony landmarks, muscle tissue, and joint articulations in the cervical, shoulder and elbow joints. Appropriate tests and measures for the cervical spine and upper quarter, including a neuromuscular examination Tests and measures for the upper quarter (neck, shoulder and elbow) Manual therapy techniques specifically for the cervical spine, shoulder and elbow Competency Examination: Level TWO participants will demonstrate competency through written and practical examination provided by the course instructors. Participants must pass both the written and practical examination to progress to the next course in the series.
