Arthritis or the damage that sets up in our body joints is considered a problem associated with ageing. Loss of cartilage, depleting calcium, wear and tear of the ligaments or excessive weight might have contributed to the onset of arthritis. There has been a rise in the number of young Indians diagnosed with knee arthritis and other problems of joints and ligaments. According to health experts, obesity, lack of exercise, injury in bones or muscles, hereditary defects in alignment of legs, faulty lifestyle and absence of physical activity lead to early degeneration of muscles and cartilage around the joints. Right footwear and correct gait There are 33 joints in our foot and our entire body weight is supported by it. Ideally, no area of the foot should take extra weight. Whenever there is an uneven distribution of weight, and uneven displacement of pressure on our feet, we have problems like corns, callouses, ingrown toenails, knee pain and even back pain.

However, not all these problems require interventions; it s just the right footwear, the correct gait and an ideal weight that helps a lot. Youngsters need to exercise Children lead inactive lives with almost zero physical activity, thanks to their Internet, television and gadget addictions. That can cause arthritis in their mid-twenties. It is extremely important to exercise in order to control weight and maintain muscle mass because the muscles support the bones and joint. When there is loss of muscle and increase in fat, a person will have joint and knee pains. Not just parents, but schools too should be sensitized about the importance of mobility balance in children from a young age. It is very important for children to go for biomechanics and gait analysis. Obesity and knee pain People in their 30s and 40s complain of knee pain these days. A BMI (Body Mass Index a measurement made by comparing the height and weight of a person) of more than 32.5 makes the degeneration of joints and bones faster. Obese men are 15 times more likely to have torn knee cartilage and women in the same category are 25 times more at risk. Tips for healthier knees Severe knee pain will never go away 100%. But you can make it negligible by taking the following measures: 1. For most forms of knee pain, applying ice is the first step to recovery. Ice wrapped in a towel acts as an anesthetic. 2. Avoid the knee bashers. Some activities such as running and hiking over hilly terrain put a greater demand on the kneecap. 3. Berries, ginger, avocado, flaxseed, omega-3-rich fish, and soy are excellent for your knees. 4. Check your shoes avoid heels, awkward bumps and hard materials. 5. If there is any difference in the lengths of your legs, ensure you get insole so your body posture is balanced.

3 Issue No: 151, Date: 15 th June, Muscle up your leg. To strengthen the quadriceps, start with straight leg raises. Consult a physiotherapist for more exercises. 7. Work your hamstrings. To rehabilitate an injured knee, it is essential to build up strength in the hamstring muscles on the back of the thigh. 8. Excessive sodium should be avoided as it contributes to water retention and swelling, which puts pressure on your knees and causes pain. 9. If your knee pain is caused by arthritis avoid green peppers, eggplant, paprika, tomatoes and potatoes, all of which contain sotanine, a toxin to which arthritis sufferers may have sensitivity. 10. Vitamin C is great for your knees. Ensure you stock up on this 'powerhouse' vitamin to keep your knees in shape. 4 SERVE HUMANITY BY DONATING BLOOD Blood donation occurs when a person voluntarily has blood drawn and used for transfusions. The estimated requirement of blood in India is around 1.2 crore units per annum, according to a source. According to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in , blood collection through various sources, including blood donation camps, was 1.1 crore units a shortage of 11.5 lakh units. The data also shows that 16 States (including Union Territories) faced a shortage while 18 States had sufficient or excess of blood units. In our country, where Delhi had a surplus of 233 per cent in available blood units on one hand, Bihar, on the other hand had faced an 85 per cent shortage the State had just 1.6 lakh units available against a demand of 10.3 lakh units per annum according to the information provided by the government resources. There is a constant need to replenish stocks in our blood banks as the shelf-life of donated blood is 35 to 42 days. The problem can be addressed if only two percent more Indians donate blood

5 The availability of blood is related to events like major operations, trauma-induced surgeries, cancerrelated procedures pregnancy related complications which require blood transfusions. Apart from these there are also disorders like sickle cell anemia, thalassemia and haemophilia that require repeated blood transfusions. Importantly, the need is not only for blood but for "safe blood" i.e. blood that is available for transfusion. That blood which is unsafe should not be available for transfusion. The donated blood should ideally be checked for HIV, HBV (hepatitis B virus), HCV (hepatitis C virus) and other blood transmitted diseases prior to being made available for transfusion, The issue of blood shortage is due to many factors like lack of voluntary donors, different types of myths associated with blood donation like people with high cholesterol, diabetes or hypertension cannot donate blood, or that donating blood could lead to infections as attention is not paid on hygiene and safety in hospitals or that people on medication cannot donate blood. All these myths can only be removed through awareness, sensitization and enhanced blood donation camps.

6 Men can give blood every 12 weeks and women can give blood every 16 weeks. Blood Safety You must never give blood or platelets if... Blood Components The blood's main components are red cells, plasma and platelets. These are used to treat many different illnesses and conditions. 1. You are HIV positive. 2. You are a hepatitis B carrier. 3. You are a hepatitis C carrier. 4. You have ever had or been treated for sy philis 5. You have ever received money or drugs for sex. You must not give blood or platelets if...you think you need a test for HIV/AIDS, HTLV (Human T-lymphotropic virus) or hepatitis. Facts about the Blood Donation Process They have a short shelf life, so we always need to top up the supply: 1. red blood cells can be stored for up to 35 days 2. platelets can be stored for up to 7 days 3. plasma can be stored for up to 3 years Who can give Blood You can give blood if you: 1. are fit and healthy 2. weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs or 50kg 3. are aged between 17 and 66 (or 70 if you have given blood before) 4. are over 70 and have given blood in the last two years How often can I give blood? Donating blood is a safe process. Blood donation is a simple four-step process: registration, medical history and mini-physical, donation and refreshments. Every blood donor is given a mini-physical, checking the donor's temperature, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin to ensure it is safe for the donor to give blood. The actual blood donation typically takes less than minutes. The entire process, from the time you arrive to the time you leave, takes about an hour and 15 min. The average adult has about 10 units of blood in his body. Roughly 1 unit is given during a donation. A healthy donor may donate red blood cells every 56 days, or double red cells every 112 days. A healthy donor may donate platelets as few as 7 days apart, but a maximum of 24 times a year.

The body will replenish the elements given during a blood donation some in a matter of hours and others in a matter of weeks. One donation can help save the lives of up to three people. If you began donating blood at age 18 and donated every 90 days until you reached 60, you would have donated 30 gallons of blood, potentially helping save more than 500 lives!
